Re: shaft packing,traditional or dripless

I replaced my flax packing with Gore GFO packing five years ago. It was the best thing I ever did. I have it adjusted so there are no drips when the packing is at ambient temperature and about 1 drop every six seconds when the packing is warm. In five years I never needed to readjust the tightness o...

Re: Anyone had a Sideshift stern thruster installed?

That should work. It will be 4 inches below the waterline instead of 5 inches, but the Sideshift representative seems to think that would be ok. The only downside is you will be putting two holes through your transom beneath the waterline, but if you seal it well with 5200 sealant it should be fine....

Re: Anyone had a Sideshift stern thruster installed?

Glad to help. Please post lots of pictures when you do the install. Maybe I can convince my wife that we can't live without it.

Re: Anyone had a Sideshift stern thruster installed?

My understanding was that you needed top of propeller blades to be about 5" below waterline... you don't have that depth on an F26? Since the engine in the F26 is in the back third of the boat the bow sits pretty high. You can see that the boot stripe is at the waterline at the stern but is quite a...

Re: Anyone had a Sideshift stern thruster installed?

The F26 bow does not sit deep enough in the water to use the Sideshift bow thruster. I've done all the measurements and it won't work. A tunnel bow thruster could work on an F26, but it would have to be pretty far back to be deep enough which means the thruster would need to be stronger than normal ...

Here's the thread I started when I was considering installing a stern thruster ( http://www.trojanboats.net/wforum/viewt ... n+thruster ).

Re: Anyone had a Sideshift stern thruster installed?

Here is my fix That I fully believe will work and do a good job . I would like your though on this too Dog House . Mounting one of these under your swim platform .You may need to raise the platform a little and reinforce the mounting (easy) or put one on if you don't have one https://sideshift.com/...

Re: Anyone had a Sideshift stern thruster installed?

I guess I really don't know enough about stern thrusters as I thought I did. I read not to have the thruster down below the bottom of the boat. I figured they recommended this only because it would cause drag and lower my top speed. Wasn't too concerned about that. Now though it seems there are oth...

Re: Anyone had a Sideshift stern thruster installed?

I looked into installing a stern thruster on my F26. The problem was the F26 has a really shallow draft. I was not able to install the stern thruster deep enough in the water so I didn't buy it. Before you purchase a stern thruster, make sure you can mount it deep enough in the water to be effective.

Re: Engine mounts

If the shafts are not touching the shaft log I wouldn't change anything. My shaft is closer to one side than the other. The alignment of the strut and the engine/transmission is what's important. If the shaft is not touching the shaft log the alignment of the shaft log and the shaft is not important.

Re: 1971 F26 Front Window

Not familiar with the coefficient of thermal expansion of makrolon. Will continuous bonding not present differential CTE problems? The coefficient of thermal expansion of Makrolon (polycarbonate) is 0.0000375 In/in/F which is about 5 times that of glass. The coefficient of thermal expansion of plex...

Re: 1971 F26 Front Window

I put the new Makrolon window in the window frame and it fit. :D The Makrolon is very flexible and contoured to the window shape immediately. My plans to permanently install it in April are the following: 1. Remove the protective covering from the Makrolon and scuff from the edges to about 1 inch in...

Re: 1971 F26 Front Window

I scraped the window frame with a razor knife and then sanded it with 80 grit sandpaper. I then used a pick to clean out the grooves. After everything was clean I wiped it down with acetone and then dried it with a clean rag. The window frame is now ready for the new window. https://i1263.photobucke...

Re: 1971 F26 Front Window

I received the Makrolon yesterday. Here's a picture of the new sheet of Makrolon next to the old plexiglass window. https://i1263.photobucket.com/albums/ii624/clastewart/NW%20Old%20and%20New_zpsteyfitk1.jpg Since the old window had a bit of a curve to it from being in the window frame for over 10 ye...
