Re: Poor old boat can't plane!

Thanks for the insight! The boat was painted last winter - but it didn't help performance in any noticeable way. I've had the props redone, and even tried new michigan wheels at 14 x 15, revved higher, but seemed slower. Until a repower, I should get used to the slow lane, and probably put them back...

Re: Poor old boat can't plane!

Hi guys - revisiting this as not too much has changed. It's now a question about repowering without bankrupting us. My 1975 Trojan F32 is a great boat - but I've always thought it was underpowered. I've been really envious of you guys hitting 20+kts, when I'm lucky to get anywhere near 13.5 kts. I w...

Re: Trojan Sea Queen sea worthiness

Fun topic - I'm in Long Beach too, and also started off in a small boat, albeit a 17 ft center console with a 60 hp motor. In essence - buy the boat and stay in the harbor. Duffy boats rule the area, and if it's a classic looking boat you'll be right at home. Music in the marina on Thursday nights, ...

Re: engines balking at 3000 RPM

Just because I chased this same problem - I found I had several problems that all needed to be eliminated First - BOTH my distributors were not advancing - check that you're getting 30+ degrees advance . You might get lucky with cleaning / oiling them. My springs were shot, so I replaced both with n...

Re: distributor replacement M360

My notes from my 318 conversion PORT MOTOR STD / LH / CCW 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 STBD MOTOR REV / RH / CW 1-2-7-5-6-3-4-8 Black wire = - COIL Purple White wire = + COIL The biggest thing was that #1 at the distributor wasn't where I predicted. I literally used a plug wire in #1 cap, to a grounded plug to f...

Re: distributor replacement M360

Now you gotta make sure the firing order is correct and in the right spot. You might be 180° off?

I went through the same thing with two pertonix and two 318's. It runs perfect now, but initially I was 180° off, then I was 30° off - now it's perfect.

Best of luck

Re: Engines Stalling

I had this same problem, and a few others, that were solved by everything you've done, PLUS replacing the distributor with a Pertronix (I have Chrysler motors). http://www.marineengine.com/boat-forum/showthread.php?379014-Chrysler-318-cant-get-over-2200-RPM&highlight=318+distributor+advance Read...

Re: replacement distributors

I bought two Pertronix D241801 distributors for my F32 with Chrysler Marine 318 engines. I've had zero issues with them. These distributors "don't care" if the engine is CW or CCW; as we all know, the distributor turns the same way, and only your wiring will differ. https://pertronix.com/p...

Re: onan generator

You'll find that "It depends... ". Onan parts are increasingly hard to find, and when found are expensive. Generators have come a long way since then too, and a portable Honda on the bow may do better and be cheaper in the long run. Use this for whatever it's worth. My story is actually go...

Re: water damage?

Project boats = financial, and personal life killers Never buy a project boat, unless... well, actually, never do it. In the last 20 years, I've bought three of them. Each of them have blown by any fantasy budget, and caused nearly irreparable damage to my marriage. The latest one, our F32 is great ...

Poor old boat can't plane!

I resurrected this thread - please pop to the last post - thanks! I have a 1975 F32, with two 1986 318 engines. Help me solve the riddle as to why I can't exceed 12 kts using these clues below (I'm stumped). The boat might be heavy - with the original 4KW genset, 4 fuel tanks, sofa, full fridge, etc...

Re: A PERSONAL NOTE FROM AARON........BIG 'C' HAS RETURNED.

Very sorry to hear this - fight will all you can, nuke that nasty (insert real foul words as necessary here) stuff out of your body! Fight hard! My 5yr old son recently had a tumor and kidney removed, went though radiation treatment and is completing chemo right now - 19 weeks more. Nobody knows how...

Re: Ignition Timing Curve

I'm a Chrysler guy - 360 (previous boat) and 318 x2 - current boat. I have been through heck with the distributors all these boats, all the springs eventually go bad, weights stick, etc. On the 360 I bought a Mallory YLM that I never quite got the right springs on, and thus always got out of the har...
