Great visuals, but they need a little fine tuning. Scope of rode is measured from where the rode enters the water, not from the bow of the boat. In the second picture, all but the far right (10:1) anchors are incorrectly set. This is most commonly caused by trying to set the anchor with insufficient...

I can't offer much in terms of novel advice, other than reiterate age old technique. Anchors set best if you pull them parallel to the bottom. Properly set anchors break free when their rode lifts off the bottom near the anchor. So you need plenty of rode. The way to set and stay set is to stop all ...

Last year I installed an ammeter on my 10M, which has dual 30A service. I relocated the inlet to the transom, so I only run one 30A line. I have run my microwave and a/c in addition to whatever lights, fridge, etc. were on at the time with no problems. I haven't tried running the water heater with t...

I ran with that set up for about a season. My port mechanical pump failed due to cam wear and I put an electrical pump in series before it. I made the repair just prior to taking a party underway, so I left the old pump in place until I got around to removing it. So yes, it will work. But then you m...

This thread is drifting a bit. Let me post one note on wire sizing and we can move on. You can roughly convert ac amps to dc amps by multiplying by 10. Watts = volts x amps holds for dc or ac, so you need 10 times more amperage at 12v as you do at 120v to get the same wattage. You can see how long y...

You will not be able to run your air conditioning on an inverter. A 16k btu a/c draws about 15A at 120vac, and needs almost three times that to start. Convert that to dc and you're looking at a constant draw of 150A, or about three group 31 batteries per hour. The rest of your gear could be run on a...

I paint everything but the zincs and props. I tried an experiment two seasons ago when I replaced my trim tabs--I didn't paint them. I can't begin to describe the fauna that sprouted up. After much scraping, last season's paint job eliminated the problem. And my boat rarely sits for more than a coup...

There is some wood in the bilge pocket between the fresh water tank and the engine room bulkhead. It is on the port side, probably not structural, but my surveyor dinged it for rot. I think the electrical wiring is mounted on a piece of wood behind the breaker box. And my boat also has a strip of wo...

The boat was shrink wrapped yesterday, so more photos may have to wait. As for painting, my marina did the final application. I can't say enough good things about them. I have some experience in automotive refinishing, so they let me do the prep. This included the ridiculous amount of taping before ...

Trojan Porn or How I Wasted My Spring
I am ex-Navy. I can't seem to get it out of my system. If it moves, I grease it. If it doesn't move, I paint it. My 10M looked just like RWS's boat. But I couldn't leave well enough alone. My transom from those stylin' 80's stripes back was painted by the previous owner in black imron. Not bad, but ...

OK, this sucked. My course made good had to be 055. I spent over two hours today slogging through this crap at about 11 kts. I found I could run at 20 kts on anything left of 000 or anything right of 130. I was going from Port Washington, NY to Norwalk, CT in Trojan 10m express. Oh, and it was raini...

You are comparing two old boats. The Maxim is still an old boat. At 15 years, many wear items may be at the end of their service lives. I think you need to dig a little deeper into which boat will hold up better during the period you plan to own it. It may well be the Maxim, but then again, the Troj...

I had my 10m out in true 8 ft seas. I verified the sea state via a weather buoy. My son and I had a blast. My daughter was terrified, and we had to abort. We managed to kick the screws out of the water a couple of times. These boats are really solid! The rudders are undersized and simply won't turn ...
