If it proves to be relevant, my unit is actually an SH12 (12,000 BTU), and I have a copy (pdf) of the 'operations' manual that depicts the 3 rotary controls being talked about (top : mode [off/fan/run], middle : fan speed, bottom : thermostat [wamer/cooler]), from Sept 2000.

You have a reverse cycle air / heat system. My 1979 F32 has the same setup. I have used the heat setting but only rarely - on heat the unit tends to trip the breaker from time to time. I use a small ceramic heater as I find it quiter and it delivers more consistent heat. I usually only use the rever...

I have some friends who live aboard year around, at the west end of Lake Ontario. They do winterize their engines (they aren't moving between mid October and early April) , but one thing they have done is put electric heating blankets (like for your bed) in the bilge area to keep water and holding t...

For me it's a tie... - 6-8 footers, very close together, on Lake Ontario or - 4-5 foot overtaking sea on the starboard aft corner ... When you travel eastwards towards Kingston (Ontario) there is an 'inside' route where you are protected from the open lake by some islands - makes for nice flat water...

I ALWAYS keep at least one hatch open at least a bit while underway, unless spray, rain, or waves over the bow are a problem... I am normally driving from up top so fumes underway are less of an issue, but once we stop somewhere and go below, I want to make sure the interior of the boat has been wel...

For anchoring in general, you normally want a scope of 4:1 for 'calm' conditions and 7:1 for high winds or waves. Anchor chain does help as the other posters have indicated, but remember - the harder the anchor gets set due to wind and waves, the harder its gonna be to get it back out again ! Also, ...

Line wrapped around shaft would also be the first thing I would check for. As you went over the marker you could have cut the line and gotten a bunch of it wrapped up around the shaft, or wedged in between strut and prop. As long as you were going forward, the 'spin' was still in the same direction....

In 1979 they were using a system by InstaTrim - http://www.insta-trim.com Unfortunately their web site does not appear to be working, so don't know if that means they have a temporary problem or are gone... I had a leak in one of my hoses a few years ago. The marina was able to haul, flush, replace ...

The brochure I have does't comment on an F31, and is probably from late 70's, but your F31 looks a lot like an F30, which has a beam of about 11' or 11'1" (for the Express or Sport). I also have specs from 1969, and at that point a 31 Express (woodie) had a beam of 11'2". F32's have a 13' ...

pnmudge - water moves.... You can pump until you are dry. Then 2 people move more forward than they were before, you fill or empty a water or gas tank that wasn't before, load a bunch of crap or tools or whatever... the bow may have only dropped by 1/4" relative to where it was before, but that...

A year ago, I saw a BEAUTIFUL 36 Sedan (about a 1968 vintage woodie) with the most god-ugly bow thruster newly attached... and shuddered. The owner has put literally $200K or more into restoring this gorgeous machine; why he would bugger it with this ugly thing I don't know. Flip side : I know a guy...

Hopefully I did this right and size isn't a problem... Very basic and crude depiction, and others can elaborate if they wish to, but in general this is what is being talked about. When you look at the hull from the outside, you see the black line - the hull shape and keel. If you look from the insid...
