Re: Replacing Frost Plugs

The point of a "freeze" plug (I think that's the more common term) is to pop out when water inside the engine block freezes. So, it's a relief point, hopefully keeping the block from cracking. They are just round metal discs around the size of a 1/2 dollar tapped into the block.

Re: 10M Express what is the best prop?

Correct, the mid cabin gears were 1.52:1. I think you have confirmed without doubt you have an express. I wonder if someone just replaced both drivetrains out of a mid cabin.

At a glance, the hulls look the same. I could someone easily making that mistake.

Re: 10m mid cabin - Crusader 8.1's initial impression

Posting here as well: I adjusted the tachs to the “real” numbers and went for a cruise last night. Verified by the ECM output: 3,400 19.1k 28gph 3,600 21k, 30gph 2,800 14k, 20gph I have a couple of more hours of break in run time, oil change then I’ll see what my WOT looks like. Depending on how you...

Re: Mid cabin 1988 repower

I have 18x20, four blade which is the largest diameter you can swing. I’m actually a bit under the prop/hull clearance recommendation of 15%, I believe 12% was my final number. I adjusted the tachs to the “real” numbers and went for a cruise last night. Verified by the ECM output: 3,400 19.1k 28gph ...

Re: Mid cabin 1988 repower

I'm wrapping up a repower on a mid cabin myself but gas engines. RWS is your guy with Yanmars, I'm sure he'll have a lot to add. His is an express though, not mid cabin.

Re: 89 mid cabin emergency power

There is a switch for the crossover but I know I read that happens automatically, every time. I'm almost positive there is a note to that effect on the wiring diagram. I think the switch is to manually connect both banks but I don't know exactly what would not be working to require that step (soleno...

Re: 10m mid cabin - Crusader 8.1's initial impression

I called Faria and they said the scanner/ECM RPM's are "the" source so adjust the tachs to those numbers and call it a day. The guy I spoke with wasn't surprised that both were off the same amount. Thinking back, I'm pretty sure I was coming up short on the old engines but didn't really di...

Re: 10m mid cabin - Crusader 8.1's initial impression

Good idea, I own an IR tach already and even had the foresight to apply the tape “just in case” so here I am! I can’t imagine how the data feed from the ECM could be inaccurate but I’ll let the handheld tach settle the bet. On the tachs, they’re both set for 8 Cyl and untouched since I first set the...

I will double check with my IR tach. Here’s a quick video showing the difference underway:

Re: 10m mid cabin - Crusader 8.1's initial impression

So the plot thickens and not in a good way. Here is the rabbit hole sequence of events: I had a bunch of codes which seemed to be voltage related. To address that: 1) I reseated the ECU connections and disconnected the slave/master connector so I could keep any issues isolated. I load tested the bat...

Re: 10m mid cabin - Crusader 8.1's initial impression

Well, I kept them as a spare set. The prop shop cupped them as much as possible. They’ll get me home but probably not a pair I could run for long.

Kegan, thanks. I'll keep updating this thread. Correction on props. New ones are 18x20 (not 21). Michigan Wheel, nibral DQX.

port 8.1 10m mid cabin.jpg 8.1_cyl after 3.5 hours of break in.JPG Here are a couple of pics. The top one just showing the portside installed. The 8.1's are a perfect fit from a mounting perspective with two exceptions. 1) The original engine mounting brackets were at an angle for the old 454's. Wi...

Gear ratio is now 2:1, Hurth 8 degree down angle transmissions. It was 1.52:1 on the old engines.
