Re: Lithium House Bank Batteries

Correct. The VR will keep the alternator in check, and the DC/DC charger will act as a check on alternator over charging the LFP house bank by reducing excess amps off the engine bank, while underway, to no more that 30. BMS (Battery Management System) in the LFPs will also regulate charging to proh...

Re: Lithium House Bank Batteries

OK. I’ve decided to add the LFP house bank to my little old F26 HT. The ABYC had a good online seminar about LFP on boats. That dumped me over the edge. Yes, it’s going to be expensive, and yes, I can afford it, and yes, I’m getting too old to know better....BUT, it makes sense to me, as I like to g...

Re: Lithium House Bank Batteries

Hey Goran, You’re in Croatia, right? Went there on a trip that started in Zagreb and then down to Split and then on a small boat on the Adriatic. If I ever win the lottery I’m moving to Korcula. Great island, and think that’s where Marco Polo was born? Anyway, for all doubting folks about LFP batter...

Re: Lithium House Bank Batteries

I store the boat in a shed over the winter. No solar there and winter starts here in upstate New York now through April and temps can freeze FLAs. Been there, done that.

Re: Acceptable amount of steam from exhaust

I get more steaming on colder days at higher rpms (~3000) from my single 318 rwc engine. Risers are ok, oil, temp, etc all good in spec. Our lake water doesn’t usually warm up until July. I’m usually just putt-puttering around at <2000 rpm and it don’t see much, if any, steaming from exhaust.

Re: Shore power and newer marinas

Good article. We just upgraded our dock AC elec. system and so far, so good. We’re a coop club with 125 slips capable of taking boats up to 50’ loa so all the works done by us members. Luckily some of these members are also electrician, so labor is not a cost. Also, good article on lithium batteries...

Re: Lithium House Bank Batteries

Thanks again for the information. I’m still pondering and percolating on LiFePO4 for house bank and keeping lead acid (SLA or AGM) for starter. I’ve read that alternators and lithium batteries are like republicans and democrats these days. Too much time together can cause the alternator diodes to bu...

Re: Lithium House Bank Batteries

Thanks for your info. I checked out the link. Seems a bit dated. From the information I’ve been able to get the chance for exploding LiFePO4 batteries has been mitigated with built in battery management systems (BMS) that sense voltage and temp extremes and shut down the battery. The use of NMC batt...

Lithium House Bank Batteries

After yanking my 2 house bank and 1 engine batteries (all lead acid, group 29 @75lbs each) and bringing them home for the winter and to replace them this spring (they’re 5 years old and my although they test out ok my experience with these tells me they’re at the end of their life), I’ve been thinki...

Re: Engine issue

Anddddd....drum roll please.......cost for marina to pump out old water logged gas, install new sender because old one was shot, refill tank with fresh gas and sea trial.......$659.00.......Very expensive lesson for me to learn about making sure there’s a good o ring to seal my gas cap. Just in time...

Re: Engine issue

Thanks all for advice. Just put a new o ring on gas and waste caps. Going to have my marina handle the tank pump out, etc. next week. Total cost for o rings $2. To prepare myself for the next cost I shall now hit my forehead with a brick several times.....

Re: Considering a 1986 F27 but...12MPH top speed?

Oh yeah...and one more thing, based on my recent stupidity and accompanying posts and pictures of my gas samples from old and new fuel water separator filters.....BE SURE THE RUBBER O RING ON THE GAS FILL GAP IS NOT LEAKING!! Seriously, I’d get a survey done if you want this boat. Old Trojans are li...

Re: Engine issue

Well, duh.... That picture I shared of the light yellow gas sample? Yup, that big bottom layer is WATER. Gonna have tank drained of as much water as possible and then BUY A NEW FILLER CAP O RING! Gas is non ethanol but not impervious to water coming into the tank during rain storms from a filler cap...

Re: Considering a 1986 F27 but...12MPH top speed?

AND FINALLY....walk around on the deck and be aware of any soft spots. The hull is solid fiberglass but the decks are fiberglass over balsa core. Lots of places for water to get into that core over the years from unsealed fittings. If you can do repairs yourself you’ll save beaucoup bucks. Is this t...

Re: Considering a 1986 F27 but...12MPH top speed?

Add a few more variables to the mix: Dirty bottom, mis-tuned engine, 6000 lbs seems heavy, levelers working?, fuel filter clean? Get some records, take it out and it should get up to 3200 rpm easily and stay there without bogging down, slowing down, hesitating, etc. If that Merc has 260 hp it should...
