Re: shaft packing question
I was worried about the packing being too tight after snugging them up prior to launch (before I looked up and read the instructions! ) but figured that I should be good since i was able to get them dripping.

Re: shaft packing question
I'm beginning to hate GFO packing! When I got to the boat I loosened the packings until I had 20+ drips a minute in the slip. I then took the boat up the river to the end of the no wake zone (about a mile) and the port shaft was at 120 degrees. It wasnt dripping as much so I loosened it more to abou...

Re: Need some Velvet drive help.
Update: Double checked all plug wires and everything was correct. adjusted the rpms up to 750 idle in neutral and the sound all but went away!!! Of course I now have a slight tranny leak at the flange seal and a oil leak at the intake manifold ! aghhh actually ran the boat up the sassafras river up ...

Re: Need some Velvet drive help.
Thanks Rick! Thats actually one of the first ones I read after Mike suggested I google the issue. Thought it was funny that the description of the issue, "The rattle sounds like loose parts and seems to come from the rear of the trans." Was the exact description I would have used. May try ...

Re: Need some Velvet drive help.
I'm hoping raising the rpm up will help some. good to know I'm not the only one with this noise and even better hearing that people have been running with the rattle without issues!

Re: 1987 10 meter mid cabin complete restoration.
Thanks! I was nice to see her floating again. Still not sure exactly what wrong ,if anything, with the tranny. Will be checking that I have spark at all 8 cylinders and confirm that the plug wires are run correctly. I also need to raise the engine idle up a bit and hopefully that will help.

Re: shaft packing question
Mike, Im assuming if they were too tight I wouldnt have all the spray. I just did a google search on GFO and saw warnings not to over tighten the packing because once over tightened it almost impossible to loosen the nut and get it to drip without removing the packing and starting over. I did snug t...

Re: shaft packing question
Thanks guys, Im trying to keep my bilge as dry as possible which is why I went with the GFO. I know its not supposed to drip when sitting and only slightly when running. unfortunately when I ran her the other day I had the family on and wasnt able to check them out why we were moving. I did test the...

Re: Need some Velvet drive help.
Bob, Ive been thinking about what everyone has been saying about it being the engine either missing or not firing. I had triple checked everything before firing them up in my shop but at the last minute decided to put shrink wrap #'s marking each plug wire 1-8. I could have easily screwed up the wir...

Re: Need some Velvet drive help.
The engine "seems" to be running fine. When I set the Timing the timing Mark was smooth and steady. I did find out that I was quite off on the original timing during the original 20 min warm up. Had to turn the distributor almost 1/4 turn to get it set properly. Wonder if I could have foul...

Re: Need some Velvet drive help.
I realize I'm being optimistic thinking a higher rpm will fix that awful sound but it sounds like a lot of people had the same issue.
Who knows, maybe I'll actually get lucky for once! Probably not but there is a slight chance!
