Do you have the mechanical fuel pump, if so , sometimes when the diaphragm and spring gets old and weak they can present issues much like you have, then it will fail completely and you will see fuel in the bleed line to the carb. Low fuel pressure can make the engine miss just like you have.
I once had an engine run out of fuel the odd time, turns out there was air getting in thru some bad fittings in the valves on the fuel rail tree.
