About to pull the trigger on a 1974 36' tri cabin. the boats been out of the water for 5 plus years. was winterized. Do these boats have any particular areas where there could be rot in the stringers, etc? I know the the back deck needs replaced and the cabins need remodeled. basically the boat needs restored. This is my first house boat, what should i look for on these? I'm getting the boat for a song so not i'm not worried about a project.

thanks, Chad

Welcome to the forum!

Do you have a '77 Datsun? I have a '74 260Z and used to race a 240Z.

Welcome. Yes, search is your friend, as are we. I have to ask, do you want to fix a boat, or go boating? Everyone needs a hobby, but you may end-up spending more updating the boat than you could buy a working vessel for, spend years doing it, and maybe get 25 cents on the dollar when you or your estate eventually sell. One dormant member here spent over $100,000 (IIRC) updating a 10 meter (IIRC again). The price of project boats is low for a reason. What did the survey say about condition?

That said, I love my tricabin. Wide flat decks, no ladders on board, great layout, solid fiberglass hull. Mine has a bath tub. You will not get more privacy on any other 36 foot boat.

<trying not to be offended by use of "houseboat>

Did not have a survey, looked at it myself.... I'm doing all of the work on it so i'm fine with investing time and money into it. (30,single, no kids) The boat is a steal for $2,000, well i hope so. I have no problem with plucking the engines out ( if they need rebuilt), remodeling and up-dating cabin. I just dont want to get into structure/ stringer repair. I plan one giving the boat another look over soon.

Make sure you can get insurance with out a survey .Proof of Insurance is a must at most marinas and its just good common sense , Regardless A survey is still a dam good idea .

Here are two pages from the 1974 Catalog.
If you buy her we have the owners manual.
