Windlass for 10 meter

Post by fighterpilot »

In the process of purchasing a 1986 10 meter express with out a windlass. Will need to put one on it. Was there one on them from the factory? Is there a mounting base for them? Any suggestions as to make/model etc. Thanks.

I added a Lewmar Freelall 600 in 2001, 17 years ago to my 10 meter

it was adequate at best

deploying was always perfect

lots of issues with the clutch and gypsy on retrieve

difficulties in getting the clutch to engage, and the gypsy would occasionally spin on the rode

despite mounting it as far aft as possible, its design allowed it to dump the rode too fat forward in the anchor locker, where it would ball up at times during retrieve.

During this years refitment, while I was replacing the water soaked balsa, I upgraded to the GOOD freefall windlass.
I will ATTEMPT to post some photos.

Meanwhile, DO YOUR RESEARCH before selecting a windlass AND DON'T UNDERESTIMATE OR SKIMP ON THE WIRE SIZE

It should be noted that we extended the bow pulpit a bit to the rear, shortening the door to the rode locker.

This was done to INSURE that the rode would be dumped as close as we could get to the deepest part of the locker

I'll get some finished photos taken this weekend and will post

That's a great idea! Something for me to consider as I am still trying to decide if I want a windlass.

Very nice . I really like that Good rode/chain windlass . I had a Good rope only that worked great at 38 years old . But I wanted to also use chain . So I went with a Lemar pro 1000 due to cost . It was not a free fall but the price was right and you can convert it to free fall ( the pro fish is) . Well the power down is so fast , I have no plans to do so , in fact is seems faster then the free fall I had . I am very happy with it . With that said The Good is a better Windlass and I would have gone with it but the price was right on this one . one year old .

Another vote for the Good. I installed the same one as RWS, even the same bow roller, worked flawlessly, nice equipment, quality parts, very nice family business to buy from and made in the US. Would not hesitate to buy again.

Great information. Very nice job. Had hoped they had a standard windlass configuration for the boat, but guess not. As I understand the situation will have to improvise to add a windlass. Thanks.

I recommend Lewmar PRO-Series 700 comes with a maximum pulling capacity of 700 pounds and Ideal for vessels that measure by up to 38 feet.

I just put in a Good F850, see my posting under "12 Meter Pulpit" Tom Ring and his son were always available to answer any questions.
Installation was easy. 4 holes for studs and two 3-1/8 holes, one for motor one for rope/chain. And it's low profile.

my Lewmar freefall 600 lasted 16 seasons, but was visibly tired at the end

I am so very impressed with the GOOD windlass and the support this will likely be the last windlass I ever buy

Kind of like the stainless manifolds and risers I jut installed

I have owned this boat for 19 years - second owner

this is my last boat

dont want to do anything twice on her again.
