BACKFIRE AT WOT STARBOARD ENGINE

Post by PLAYMATE »

IT SEEMS I MAY HAVE A CARB PROBLEM. WHEN I START UP RUNS GREAT FROM 750 - 3000 RPM RUNS FINE, WHEN I OPEN UP TO 3200 RPM THE 4 BARREL KICKS IN AND I GET A CONSTANT LITTLE BACKFIRE , SOUNDS LIKE A MACHINE GUN. POP,POP,POP,POP,POP. WILL NOT GO OVER 3200. I WAS RUNNING 34-3600. NOT SURE WHAT IT COULD BE?
ITS A CARTER AFB, STANDARD ISSUE.

Sounds like a lean condition. If you had access to a known good carb and swapped it out temporarily you could isolate the problem to the carb if it runs OK afterwards. Could be any number of problems though.

Steady pop ? Could be a worn exhaust cam lobe a weak intake spring .
