Oil Pressure Gauges - This seems odd

Post by BradZ »

I was out at the boat today and the oil pressure gauges have been bothering me. With the key off they sit at about 20-30 psi. When I turn the key they drop to close to zero. Turn key off they climb to 20-30 psi. Is this normal? This is a new to me 1976 F-32 Sedan. When the engines are running its around 80 psi which doesn't seem right either. I did a sea trial for a good 45 minutes and I took it out for about an hour and a half with no issues. I didn't catch the oil pressure till the end of my last outing. Sorry just to many things to look and check all while driving the biggest boat I have ever had. Never drove twins either. But I docked it three times with no issues. Maybe a little slower than most but I put it right where I wanted to. Again the gauges have been bothering me since then. This is on all four gauges two lower and two upper. Am I getting some kind of residual power with the key off?

Going up when turning off the key/power , is not abnormal on some gauges . 80 psi seems high cold be the wrong sender . Can you ID the gague brand ? if oem they are AC .

Gauges like Delco, Datcon, Telaflex, and others the needle all will float back to the center or some wear else when the key is turned off.

When the ignition key / switch is turned on all the gauges should come alive and present themselves correctly.

Your 1977 Trojan F-32 came with Delco Gauges. If the oil gauges on both engines are reading 80 PSI then something is wrong. Most likely you have the wrong oil senders installed.

Is there a problem with any of the other gauges ( temp ) (Fuel)

Post a picture of your dash ( Upper and Lower)

Thanks guys, All the other gauges seem fine. They are all original gauges and now that Prowlerfish posted the picture that's exactly what my gauges look like. I'll look into the sender units but from what I read they are obsolete correct? I have to change all four gauges and senders correct?

That's the thing... take the photo in the vertical position, it wants to show up vertical (tall and thin). Take the photo in landscape position (short and wide) it shows up in that perspective. Left handers have the worst headaches, as most pics show up upside down!

You can also use software like Picture Manager to review and rotate any images that need to be flipped before posting.

You can take a pic, rotate your phone 90 deg , then take a screen shot. Then upload the screen shot. Brute force method, but it works.
I needed a less expensive hobby, so I bought a boat!
