Shaft Log Size 10 Meter

Post by RWS »

1983 10 Meter International Express

Factory 1.25" shafts

Can anyone please tell me the size of the factory shaft logs (stern tubes) ?

I upgraded to PYI dripless in 2005/2006 and am now way past due to replace the bellows

I need to know the size of the factory shaft logs.

Anyone?

Bob?

Please ?

Thank y'all in advance !

If you have the shaft log size for the 12 Meter I would appreciate that too. Save me a trip into the engine room.

Ok, so I went into the engine room today to measure the stern tube. On my 12M I have 1.75 inch shafts and the stern tube is a tiny bit above 3 inches.

Holy !@#$. I can't get those shaft couplings off. I tried my buddy's home made press with 4 bolts and a socket on the other side of the plate to push out the shaft, no luck. I added some torch heat, no luck. I quit. I punted to a mechanic who is going to bring his hydraulic press. Keeping my fingers crossed. I opted to buy the maintenance kit for the PSS dripless, I like a dry bilge. Once the shaft coupling comes off, the rest is a piece of cake.

I'm supposed to do this again in 6-8 years. What lubes or coatings can I put on the shaft couplings to make this process easier?
Not an option at this point to go to flax.

I am doing mine next Saturday.

Think I'll spray some PB BLASTER down there this weekend and let it soak in

Please keep us all posted.

Put 6,000 lbs of pressure on the hydraulic press and it still wouldn't move.
Got an oxy-acetylene torch on it. It got serious. Finally it popped.
Guessing two possibilities, 1) previous owner/installer installed the couplings with a method called interference fit, where you heat the right before you put it on the shaft so when it cools it will be a super tight fit, or 2) the tapers don't match.
Either way sent the prop, shaft and coupling to Bossler & Sweezy to get all cleaned and trued up.
See what they find out.

I have some spare shafts with couplings that had a set screw that screwed up against the shaft. They moved fine until the burr from the set screw got involved. My OTC 7-ton puller wouldn't even budge them, even with an impact gun (and yes, I know you shouldn't do this) and Mapp gas. Next effort will be laying my 20-ton press on its side and seeing if that along with some more heat won't get it moving better.

the old, rotted hatch allowed water to drip down on the starboard side coupler over time.

had to make a trip to Home Depot and invest in a Milwaukee 3/8" electric impact gun.

Popped the couple bolts off like BUTTER!

AMAZING TOOL !

Had a hard time sliding the shafts back, as the existing PYI collars are on fairly tight.

Took some #400 to smooth down any possible small burrs on the shafts.

Had I done that first, might have been an easier job.

The 6 cylinder in line Yanmars are narrower and LONGER than the Crusader big blocks

The presence of the PYI collar and bellows also take up space, resulting in 4.75" distance now between the now separated flange couplings

Not enough room for a conventional 3 finger puller

If I knew the bolt pattern, I could easily fashion my own 4 bolt puller out of a piece of flat steel, instead I bought one that will fit my space on line for $32 plus shipping

The new version of the bellows is supposed to be replaced every 10 years, so I'll be ready to go then :D

Meanwhile she sits on the lift till next weekend

With all the additional diesel torque, and the interference fit, I am considering buying new couplers.

Thoughts?

Lubed the shafts back up again with soap and slid them thru the cutless bearing.
All back together now.
On to a new thread....I had to turn the rudders just a bit to slide the shafts out. I get back the next day to clean up and I find steering fluid all over helm lower wall. One of the o-rings let go I guess. Another project.
I can't find a model number on the steering box. Looks like an H-20 series based on internet pictures. Is there only one repair kit for this series?

Point of information for the Forum.

The metal shaft collar on my 1983 (hull laid late 1982) Trojan International Express is actually 3"

This is the size I needed to use for the replacement PSS/PYI shaft seal bellows.

This may not apply to all Internationals, so it's best to physically double check yours before ordering
