trojan 10 meter aft cabin 1989

Post by mrrudely »

new owner here with lots of questions
changing fuel/ water separator filter managed to destroy original fuel line
1) can I replace original line from filter to pump with flexible fuel hose?
2) do I need to add additional fuel filter or is the original enough?

You can us Fuel hose from the off engine filter to the pump . You must use marine /USCG approved hose spec "A1-15 Fuel Hose" What filter do you have now ? There also is small filter in the carb also .

thank you
I believe the filter is crusader 97889 maybe sierra 18-7861
in any event it is attached to the engine
carburetors were just rebuilt so I think no issues with those filters
getting conflicting info thats why the questions
crusader dealer out here says they don't use metal fuel lines anymore
also said I should have another filter maybe before the 97889
any thoughts very welcome
thx

There are only two fuel filters on an 89 mid cabin from the factory. The one mounted to the rear of the engine and the internal one on the carb.

The metal fuel line connecting to the fuel pump should be part CRU97846. Bob at Beacon may have the part or you can check out this site.

The fittings are inverted flare. If you don't have a set of flare nut wrenches, i would pick some up. Even Harbor Freight sells a cheap set. Don't just do a patch job. Some of the sites out there have rubber fuel hoses that are direct replacements for the pump -> carb, but I haven't seen on from the fuel filter -> fuel pump.

Hope that helps.

thanks for that
the starboard filter seems impossible to get at
and based upon the amount of rust seems as if it has not been changed in years if ever
anyone have any tips on removing it?

Yes...

First, shut off the fuel manually at the crossover. This is located in the center engine compartment, mounted to the floor. When you open the hatch, its aft center, right behind the hatch.

Up next you have two choices, either enter through the rear access hatch (all the way towards the transom) and stretch out over the exhaust hoses and get a wrench on it. Expect some fuel, so throw some rags up there first. I'd plan on replacing the little canister housing too. Sierra sells a kit (18-7861). Those canisters are prone to hairline cracks.

If you can't fit in that way, then you need to remove the starboard engine hatch. To do this, you have to remove the L seat that you likely have covering that hatch. To do so, you open the compartments under the seat and feel around for some bolts with black turnstyles on them. Unscrew them and the seat will slide out of the way. It's heavier than it looks and the rubber feet are likely disintegrated so get a friend to help you lift it, or you will scratch the floor.

Does that help?

Any other mid - cabin questions?

Where are you located and can we see some boat pics?

thx
helps?
yes and no
no way am i crawling in from the rear hatch (generator is there, doable but not for me)
I have gotten the starboard hatch out of the way (slides easily seat and all)
I can see the filter but can hardly get my hands near it let alone maneuver a wrench to loosen
a frozen canister

My boat doesn't have a generator, so I didn't even think about that...

You can't get a set of channel locks on it? It doesn't matter if you destroy the canister, since you will likely need to replace it anyway.

Here are a couple of shots that might help. The first one is of the filter when i had my motors out. The second one is of the engine compartment with all hatches removed...

The only other thing that I was thinking might be in the way would be a closed cooling system. I am raw water cooled...

pardon the mess...
