F28 Salon Wall

A previous owner must have done some work and failed to re-install one of the bolts attaching the top of the rear wall to the flybridge deck. The missing bolt is hard to get too as it is partially behind the flybridge surround in the corner of the wall. This allowed any water from rain or simply washing the boat to enter and rot the top left corner of the wall and get into the interior. So, I removed the wall as well as the only other rot issue I had which was in the wood beam running under the threshold area of the door. To remove it I had to access it from inside the engine room. I replaced the ply wood wall and used a treated 2x4 under the threshold. I coated both with fiberglass resin to water proof them, now the wall is like a surfboard and should last awhile. The right side of the door was intact without and water damage so I left it as it was.

Rather than painting it white like it was originally I wanted to upgrade the appearance with some wood work. I installed a tongue and groove bamboo flooring on the wall with waterproof adhesive and small stainless steel screws for a little extra piece of mind. Trimmed it out, stained and applied several coats of spar varnish to protect. I still have a mess to clean up from the project but I thought I would share a few pics of the progress before, during and after.

Good use of materials. I’ve never seen bamboo used on a boat, but it looks great.

Agree. One thing about bamboo is that it's termite proof.

The Bamboo should hold up pretty well. I'm in a covered slip so it is not exposed to the sun except when we are out on the lake and it won't get more than the occasional splash from time to time so I think the varnish will protect it well enough from water. I will go easy on it when I wash the boat and not soak it with the pressure washer, even though I think it'll take it. I do plan to re-apply each year just like I do my swim deck.
