Having put transom door on my F36 , Its takes some time do including the reinforcement . If I was to guess I would say 3-5K but yard rates vary so it could be more

It would be at least twice that cost in the great white north! Bottom line is get it done by someone reputable that won't take shortcuts with the build or materials. Can't stress enough that simply cutting a hole won't do it, there must be proper structural support added to maintain the integrity of the transom and prevent around the opening in the future. The design of the door and it's ability to keep the sea out is important too. If it's going to swing inward, it must be a beefy locking system so crashing waves can't blow it open. A door that swings outward is safer as it would require way more force for a wave to push it in/open. It would have to break the door off to do that.

Was there a reason why this was never incorporated into the original design?

Cost vs demand . On many pricier boats of the day it was still a option . Trojan was not a true of shore battle wagon , not in the way Viking. Bertram or Hatteras was . And many of those did not come with the door std. Mine was done to make life easier on floating docks and using the dingy .

Have contemplated doing it as we almost daily go anchor and swim for the afternoon.

Its a very nice ad on to the boat . but it needs to be done right . Also my guess on cost is likely way too low . More likely closer to what Big D said .
