Teak trim substitute?

Post by rossjo »

Does anyone have a good teak trim substitute for the teak trim in the cockpit of my F32? The salon wood stays good, but I'm tired of re-doing the teak trim in the cockpit (6 pieces) every year ...

I have a few pieces of Cherry wood instead of Teak. Looks great for trim and seems to hold up well. Been on there for 3 years without a blemish

If 1/2 to 3/4 inch think material will do, check out Lumber Liquidators. I let them know at the local outlet that I was looking for scrap cherry, brazilian cherry, and teak. I've bought a couple batches for about a buck a sq ft when they had partial packages. Its a lot of labor, but I rip the tonge and grove edges, then bisket join the planks, and run through a thickness planer. I figure all winter long, there isn't much else to do in MN when its 10 below zero, and $1/ft vs $16-$20/ft for teak, its worth the time.

There's always Mahagony. Original Trojans were Phillipine, but Honduras is better. I'm repairing mine with Honduras. Go with a satin finish or use Captains Varnish for the glossy look.

Plasteak?

Has anyone tried the Plasteak trim?

The 1/2" x 1-1/2" Teak color Plasteak would replace the trim pieces in the cockpit size wise, but not sure if it will look like finished teak.

(A) Trim Lumber 1/2in x 1 1/2in x 12ft
[R-TR12112]

$10.00
(A) Trim Lumber 1/2in x 1 1/2in x 12ft

Actual measurement - .5" x 1.5" x 12' (12.7mm x 38.1mm x 3.66m)

Standard length is 12'. Small orders can be cut to 9' for package delivery.

These are the boards we use for swim platforms and trim. The boards are solid and manufactured using a foaming agent that makes the center less dense than the outside "skin." This allows the boards to be screwed without pre-drilling. They have the smoothest texture, the most eye-appealing color, and are about twice as flexible as wood lumber. By its nature it is less slippery wet than dry. Typical woodworking tools can be used on our Trim Lumber. It can be sawed, planed, mitered, routed, drilled, etc.

Standard colors are White, Black, Gray, Teak, and Green.

**NOTE: The colors teak and white are our most readily available colors of trim lumber. The other colors are special ordered which will require a longer lead time and are subject to availability.

The plastic factory is about 8 miles from my house and I have seen a number of products they have made. The picnic tables are great as well as the swim platforms. One of my friends replaces the rails on his Sea Ray with duplicate size of his teak about 3/4" x 2" they looked good for about a year now the exposure to the sun they droop. They hold their color very well and can bend if not supported.

Drooping is bad.

Mine were shipped "pre-drooped" ... that way they won't droop over time ;-)

Ok heres my timing, port transom cap, 3hours sanding, and 1 hour 80-100 grit D.A. ,1.5 hours 150 Palm Sander, 1/2 hr by hand taking out the swirls with 150 and 220, Stbd same, Toe rails 3 hrs per side with 150 Total 12 hours of sanding every year. Varnish time depends on temperature and bug count. Everyone comments on it when its finished, including my chiropractor . I actually set up a stool on the swim platform to due the transom to save bending over for hours.
