10.8 meter international engines

I have recently bought an 87 10.8 meter international and on the trip home lost an engine. I am tring to replace it, but have never done this before, What info do I need from the existing engine to get a replacement that will match. all replies would be appreciated.

There are sevral after-market (Mercruiser).

I put a First Mate 454 fro my 26 - running great - 55mph offshore to the gulf stream!

Barr is reptuable - and Mercruiser (new) is an option.
