First of all, Happy 4th to all! And now to business.....

I was pumping out the holding tank the other day, day dreaming about anything other than what was being pumped out, and got to thinking....I wonder what others are using to treat their holding tanks? I switched over to a nitrate based treatment (Odorlos) a few years ago, and this year bought the West Marine brand for a few bucks less. I saw some stuff at Wally Mart that seemed like it was the same stuff but cheaper. The advantage of the nitrate stuff is that it contains no deodorants but starves the bacteria that cause the odors, at least for a few days.

What are you using? Anyone come up with a homemade remedy? And if so, why not share the secret formula?

I use a five gallon bucket, a trash bag and special kitty kitty litter and then in the trash can it goes when we get back in.

I replaced my system a couple of years ago. I think the key to keeping the holding tank clean is to pump regularly and I use basic granular Sealand deoderant which breaks down the waste. Oderless is a good product too.

If you can unscrew the top of the tank after cleaning, dump a few bags of ice and go take the boat for a ride. The ice will scrub the insides of the tank. The just flush and pump out...

I use the ecologically "green" stuff I get at West Marine. Seems to do a good job. The best thing I have found is to pump it on a very regular basis. We do ours weekly no matter the level of usage.

I helps if you use fresh water for you tank vs salt or even lake water that has stuff growing in it

I use peat moss.

Can you get this stuff in the U.S.? Seems like it's only available in Canada?

Where do you keep it till you get back. Don't it stink to high heaven?

there is very little smell to it due to the clumping of the liquid and the deodorants in the litter, and we are only out few hours at a time fishing, and it may get actually used 1-2 times at the most.

Sounds logical, and that sounds cheaper than the Wagg Bags we have used before.
