If they are AC gauges then the senders are the same BUT the Gauges are different and made to work in pairs so if only is used it would be off . How much and what way I don't have a clue / Bob may know .

thanks prowler. i was just wondering why it would matter. the gauges are only powered on the FB when the key is on right? so if the power was disconnected to the FB wouldn't it be the same as having the key off?

No , the gauges are still wired to the sender and made to work with both gauges wired up . Also when you power up one station the other station gauges get powered up through the ignition circuit . By unplugging the upper station you have taken the gauges out of the circuit and changed the restance .

thank you so much for the info. the dual sender we have now has the 2 spade connectors that plug to the top. 1 power and 1 to the sender. if i switch to a single sender where does the power wire go? i can still use the gauges right or do they make gauges different for dual and single?

Please re-read all the above . If you do have AC gauges It The gauges made for dual helms not the sender !

Why not just fix the wiring that's burnt ?

Gauges MUST match the sender . AC need to have a AC spec sender and be the right Gauge for dual helm or the right one for single helm .OTHER brands in most cases need the right sender for single or for dual helm and they must match the gauge .

You can get the diagrams from Bob at beacon marine . He can put together a complete manual for your boat . And no you can't use the auto part senders with you gauges .
