Paul, do you have a windlass on your F-26? That's funny, I was thinking the same thing and also adding a pulpit. Not sure what type of windlass to go with though, there are so many to chose from and I don't want to make a snap decision, choose the wrong one and regret it

Yes Matt, I have a 400 Horizon by Simpson Lawrence and instead of a pulpit, I have a self launching (pivoting) bow roller. I spend allot of time on the hook and have found this thing to be priceless. In a tight anchorage area its better to be at the helm and in control of the boat when your anchor leaves the bottom than on the bow yanking on a rope, especially on a windy day.

I've been using this unit most summer weekends since I installed it in 2001 and other than greasing it once, have had to replace the gypsy (plastic) once. It's very reliable however if I was to replace it I think that I'd look for one with a free fall option.

I'll dig up a picture of it when I get home and post it for you to see.

Thanks for the photo, it's going to help quite a bit. Your deck looks to be in great shape
I have a couple of questions regarding the windlass:

Did you move your bow cleat when you installed the Windlass, and if so is it off center just a bit so it won't catch the anchor line when it's lowered?

I see you also have your original anchor setup as well, how much anchor line and chain do you have for both? and is the anchor locker pretty tight with everything?

Hi Matt,

I moved the cleat forward and installed the windlass where the cleat was originally. The cleat is installed on center and I've never had the rope or chain get caught on it. I think it's because the rear roller on the bow roller assembly tips up when the anchor is deployed and keeps the rode away from the cleat.

I have 200' of rope with 15' of chain on the windlass and 100' of rope with 10' of chain on the original anchor. As for the anchor locker, I added a small dividing wall to the right of the access door creating a three sided compartment between the hull and bulkhead. The wall runs fore & aft, is about 12'' high and is cut to shape so it will fit vertically. Its epoxied into place and is open a bit at the bottom for drainage. Its also painted with bilge paint so that a damp rope won't rot the bulkhead. This basically splits the anchor locker into a section for each anchor and I've never had the ropes get crossed up.

Keeping the original anchor in place can be a handy thing. I use it occasionally for a Bahamian rig or when a stern anchor is necessary. You'll also notice that there are a few other items that went along with this installation. 1st is the safety lanyard that is attached to the deck at one end and latched to the chain at the other to prevent an accidental deployment of the anchor. Next are the snaps screwed to the deck surrounding the windlass. These are for the Sunbrella windlass cover which is in place when the boat is not in use. Lastly, you'll notice a deck plate installed next to the windlass. Beneath it is a coil hose and nozzle that I (or my wife) use as a wash down for when the anchor comes up dirty.

Thank you Paul, you've been a big help. It looks like I'm going to add it to the list, it just keeps growing :) One of my concerns was the rope locker, as I usually rinse and leave my anchor line out to dry before I store it. I like the idea of the windlass cover.

Thanks P-Dogg, It's been an interesting project and I have learned a lot since we started. I'm going the have the topsides re-gelcoated and a new nonskid gelcoat pattern applied (it will be rolled on). I am really looking forward to that

It's been a while since I updated the thread. It turned out to be a much larger project than expected. We ended up having to re-core the whole main deck, I guess the moisture meter doesn't lie.... All of the deck hardware has been re-finished or replaced and just waiting to be re-fastened. Here are photos showing the progress. Once the cockpit area is completed we will start on the gelcoat so I can remount the front windows. They are currently out of the boat

Here's another update. All of the coring is finally done, and glassed. The new front windows are installed and frames bedded, (the windows are Macrolon). We have spent a lot of time, blocking/filling/sanding and she just received her first coat of gelcoat yesterday. All the deck hardware has been re-chromed or replaced and waiting to be re-installed. A special thanks to Bob at Beacon Marine, helping me find some parts that needed to be replaced and for sharing his knowledge. Still a lot of work to do, to include installing the new headliner once all the rails are re-mounted. I am lucky to have an extremely talented fiberglass repair specialist working on the project. It is a lot more work than both of us expected, but it has been a fun project and am looking forward to completing it.

g'day matt, she looks amazing. before i head to work i wanted to ask who did your rechroming? i've got some helm hardware (shifter covers/throttle covers) that are pitted and i'd love to have rechromed over the winter. i have been able to polish most of it away using simichrome polish, but, it's just not to my satisfaction. i will check in when i get to boston tonight, or providence tomorrow.
