1981 F32 steering

Post by fpawn »

Notice the other night a very small fluid leak on top side steering housing. I have seen some wetness there last year. I know steering system is original and no longer being made. What should I do or expect. Ant easy fix??

If its a hynautic system you can replace the seals . Its not hard IF and I repete IF you are mechanically inclined . I have done them with no problem , and I have put some back together for folks that could not figure where all the parts went to 8)

Its likely a System Ten, (SYTEN) on an F-32 of that era.

Could be , but being 30+ years old could be anthing , hopefully the OP can ID it or post a photo . not sure why the f32 use that system and the F36 used Hynautic . But I have seen Hynautic on F32s maybe refits or maybe trojan used both ?

I think it depends on the year. I know in my 1978 factory book it lists Hynautic for F-36's and System Ten for F-32's.

I have a Sea Star 1 system retrofitted (presumably) when my boat lived in Trois Rivieres, Quebec. Its a Teleflex Canada unit. So like you say, anything is possible.

I just gutted my 78 F32 last season of its Syten steering system. I was constantly having seals leak and many parts were impossible to find. The steering was always poor in my boat. After I replaced the system with the Teleflex system the boat handles great and it was defiantly worth the investment of time and money.

My SyTen cylinder is leaking at the rod seal. What are the thought here, attempt to fix old cylinder or replace? Boat is out of state so I won't be doing it myself either way. Are the old cylinders normally serviceable?

I gutted the system and replaced both steering pumps, tubing and the hydraulic cylinder. All in last year cost me $1300usd to do it myself. It was a moderately easy job and took a full day, but it has been worth every penny!
