Need some opinions on new cabinet doors from you guys.

Post by yorklyn »

I am replacing all of the fabric covered doors that were originally in the aftcabin and the "closet " when you enter the cabin. I was originally planning on making teak "slab" doors with rounded corners (exactly what bluebelle did with his galley cabinets). Since I cant veneer the old doors I was planning on using double sided veneer, marine grade plywood and simply cutting out the correct sizes, edge banding them, sanding and god knows how many finish coat. I found the plywood in Annapolis for $250 per sheet (need 2 sheets) then need contact cement , edgebanding, varnish etc + the time to do everything myself.

option B is this place
http://www.horizoncabinetdoor.com/custo ... .php?cat=7
they have ribbon cut sapele. I can have 8 doors made and delivered for $539.
Square Flat Panel / Sapele
>> Frame Width: 2-1/4in
>> Outside Edge Profile: E-6
>> Inside Edge Profile: CS-B
>> Panel Profile: P1
>> Panel Grain Direction: Vertical Grain
Image
they are basically a shaker style door with a rounded outside edge, all solid wood including the inside panel (which would be a floating design to handle expansion and contraction , the veneer style panel is less but would be fixed )
they have a solid wood slab style door that would be closer to bluebelle's doors but it comes with battens to help with warping , that would concern me.

Big question is how do you guys think the sapele /rounded shaker doors will look on a 10 meter with light beige padded vinyl walls? Been driving myself crazy over this one!
Thanks

I think it will look good with the white. I had some pictures of a Cabo that had teak wood cabinet doors against a white background. Personally, I think its a better option on the expresses as opposed to doing everything in a wood paneling. Too much dark wood will make the space look smaller. Just having nice wood doors and some teak trim will be nicely highlighted against the white.

Just my opinion. I will see if I can find the Cabo Open/Express pics. It was beautiful. I kept the photos because I had plans to do the same thing.

not the best pic but you can see how they were wrapped with matching vinyl . didn't look too bad at the time but after 5 yrs of fiberglass , sanding, sanding, sanding , paint etc etc , I'm trying to get a more modern look.

Heres a look at it now. the top hole does not have doors but the bottom will.

These cabinet doors are made of marine ply capped with 2" mahogany and finished with Sikkens. Lap joints were used for the corners.

Hope this helps

Harris,
I thought of the mirror Idea but since its a 1987 mid cabin I thought it would be alittle dated and tacky, now if it was a 1983 express that might work! LOL!
(sorry I couldn't Resist!)

Paul,
I really like the contrast between the panel and the frame. I think that style is similar to the premade doors im looking at. They look great on the wood cabinets but I cant picture how they will look over the foam backed vinyl. I had always liked the "slab" teak doors but think im leaning towards your "shaker" style of door (especially since the they would be purchase "complete" and finished as opposed to making the teak ones)
Cant decide if im getting lazy ,smart or just cheap!
looking for some opinions ,insight, ridicule or whatever ya got !
Thanks

The pre-made doors will look great. The doors I made for the galley took a long time to finish...six to seven coats on both sides. I bought a few pre-made pre-hung doors in solid teak for the salon and they look great. Here is a link http://www.teakmarinewoodwork.com/doors_cabinet.htm

Here is a pic...

You're funny !

Actually, I have seen numerous 10 meter express cruisers with a large mirror installed on the starboard salon forward bulkhead.

It really makes the cavern look bigger and more open, and is on my list of things to do.

Now if I could just figure out how to get one to fit the ceiling in the fwd cabin.....

I think they will look nice. The Color will be a nice offset with the white and I think it will give it a richer look. Could you get a sample piece of a similar wood form Home Deport or somewhere and put it up against the wall to see what you think?

Why foam backed vinyl and not regular? Most of my panels are covered in regular white vinyl which, with the wood, would give it a nice clean look, IMHO.

The foam helps hide any imperfections in the substrate. 1/4 to 3/8 back is perfect. the 20 yd order i just got was supposed to be 3/8, they sent the wrong stuff, its 1/2 and a bitch to work with on panels. lucky i needed it mostly for the stateroom hull sides . i had to wrap the dinette seat bases which was pretty dificult .

Any way to use 1/8th inch plywood as a backer with regular vinyl in just the areas where the cabinet doors would be?

Ribbon striped sapele is what I have. Love the look! I say for that price it's hard to beat.

Shouldn't be too much of an issue to use the wood doors over the padded vinyl. never had a problem with the old doors (plywood wrapped with "Trojan cloth" wrapped with padded vinyl. no signs of wear or tear.
I would like to use the "European " hidden hinges so I have to figure out which hinge will give me the proper clearance for the door to swing out and open.
I really appreciate everyones input as I sometimes need a reality check!
I believe I'm going to go the premade route, thanks.

Quick question for the guys with the ribbon cut sapele in their vessels. am I correct that it is Sapele Mahogany? I have one wall that I would like to use a matching 1/8 plywood veneer. The place that makes these doors do not sell a matching veneer. I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion ? I have seen ribbon cut mahogany a few places?

Thanks again everyone!
