Blower reminder - boat blows up Middle river

Post by prowlersfish »

A boat blew up this weekend in middle river at the fuel dock . Remember always close the hatches and have the blower OFF when fueling up . Then after fueling open the boat and turn on the Blower . And open the hatch and sniff .

When I go to a fuel dock I see people all the time not use the blower and not checking . Or that run the bower while fueling and that sucks the fumes right in

Not sure what happened here but a sniff may have prevented it .

At a fuel dock 2 weeks ago in D-ville, a 28+ searay pulled up to get gas the first thing he did was turn on the blowers. I tried to point out his mistake nicely :) he told me to F*** off...So then a call to the marina office got his pump shut off. (The kid on the dock just stood there. I don't blame him he's a kid) And then the dock master came down and informed the NEW boat owner how to fill his boat. They held him there for an hour...the reason for the hold they wanted to make he didn't blow up the beat fuel dock in D-ville...

i see this all the time at chesapeake yachting center fuel dock just up from my marina. the first time i fueled there, the guy running the pumps tried to rush me off the dock. granted, there were several boats waiting in the wings, including a bayliner bowrider that was trying to reengineer my transom. this guy was so close to me i could literally reach out and touch his bow rail.
i asked him to please back off as once my bilges were blown, i'd be underway, but only until i'm sure my bilges are clear. he was not amused and gave me a single finger salute. the pump guy was equally anxious for me to depart. i informed him that once i was sure my vessel was fume free, then, and only then, would i depart. sure, it took maybe 10 minutes, but i was satisfied that ENTERPRISE was safe for departure. my dad always said, ''son, don't let anyone rush you off the fuel dock. no one.'' and yes, after the cabins are ventilated and the bilge is blown, yeah, i also lift my engine hatch and give a sniff, same for the aft cabin where the fuel tank is (under the aft double berth).

While , you should not be rushed off the fuel dock and you should of course not take excessive time ether . in most cases be under way in about 5 minters or so . After fuel a gas boat first thing I do is flip on the blowers ,open up the boat then when possible I walk to boat up the dock away from the pump so other boats can get to the pump . Then I open then eng hatch(s) give a good sniff and inspection . If all is OK and the blower have run 4+ minutes , I get under way .

You should inspect the blower often and may sure the blower hose goes to the LOWEST par of the bilge and is in good shape . If the hose is not there or has holes etc its like not have blower .
