DIESEL OPTIONS FOR F32?

Post by DAVIDLOFLAND »

Hi Guys,

Long time, no talk to. I hope everyone has been well.

I'm finally gonna repower this winter, and am considering used diesels vs. new gas.

Does anyone know off hand what diesels have been installed in F32's, and with what results?

Thanks,
Dave Lofland

There have been several I know of on here . Rossjo has Cummins 6 BTAs in his . JAV put Volvos in his ( 200 HP each TAMD41-B). I believe Both are happy I believe JAV wishes for a little more power . There is another F32 owner with I believe Perkins in his , this boat is not fast and is use at trawler speeds but the owner loves it . I have seen a few on the market one with a pre/early 3208N cat and one with Mercruser diesels ( not a good choice IMO ) it was under powered . Some of the Discontued Yanmars maybe a good choice , not a fan of the new VW based Yanmars .

Hopefully they will chime in along other F32 owners

I am personally partial to the Cummins 6BTA's myself. Hey Prowlersfish has a pair that have survived him!

The 6BTAs in my F32 will run 27knots (31mph), and the fuel economy at idle speed is unreal (1:1 Velvet Drives with 17x20 props) at 8knots idling.

Great setup and the Inline-6 config is easy to work on, but barely clears floor. Paul's is probably about the same clearance.

Exactly the info I was looking for. Thank you.

As I research options, the 6bta's are recommended more than anything else, plus there are a lot of them out there.

Regarding the 8kt idle, can you slow that down with trolling valves (for trolling). We have to get down to 1.8 - 2.1 kts to troll for King Salmon.

Do you guys happen to know the 'down-angle' of the gears?

A used diesel 'broker' has recommended the Cummins 5.9 over the 6bta. Says they're smaller then the 6bta, but still come in a 300 h.p version.

Anybody know anything about 5.9's?

Your broker needs to learn what he is selling . Its the same engine . The 6BTA is a 5.9 6 cylinder B series Turbo After-cooled . 5.9 liters . There also have one 210-220 hp that is turbo only (6BT ) again same 5.9 liter engine .

Most likely my own misunderstanding of what he was telling me. I know almost zero about diesels and all the info is starting to run together in my head. I have been talking to several brokers, but don't have anything back in print.

Go to boatdiesel.com for lots of great diesel information. A year's membership is about $25.00. It has a lot of ads for used diesels and specs for almost every marine diesel.

What performance are you looking for? Do you want a planing speed? Or operate at more of a displacement or semi-displacement speeds? That will determine a lot about what engines you should be looking for. Having said that, I would love to have the 6B series Cummings... If you are looking for slow speeds, a 4B series would do, except it is a little rough at idle. There is one F32 here that has 120 Lehmans that cruises at 10 knots and burns about 2 GPH per the owner.

Thanks,

I am a member at boat-diesel. That's where I have started contacting brokers.

I will be going with planing speed power, as I do a lot of day trips. I like go a fair ways out, so I need to get there and back at 20+ knots.

My buddy has the 5.9 Cummins in his 33 Viking. 300 B series. Anyway, boat runs great, fast, sips fuel while trolling. He has the trolling valves that'll slow it down to 2.5-3.5 kts for the rockfish.
