My F32 Repower

Post by Stripermann2 »

My twin Crusader 270s are still running pretty good. The port engine had been replaced when I purchased the boat years ago. I replaced the starboard with a Jasper unit not too long after bringing the boat up to DC from Fl.

These engines have been good and work their tails off for me. The port engine was starting to use more oil but ran very well, as did the starboard so I decide to replace both at the same time. After a lot of searching, I settled on 2 new GM marine engines, 4-bolt mains, complete with tin, harmonic balancer, water pump and AC Delco marine spark plugs. Port is normal rotation, starboard is reverse rotation. No issues with transmissions.

New engines arrived at my shop on Friday afternoon.

Saturday morning I drove down to the boat and after a short while of final disconnecting, my friend brought his Lull crane down and pulled the engines and genny out. Nothing wrong with genny, just want to clean and paint. This took about 15 minutes.

Trailered them back to my shop yesterday and now I just need to find the time to swap parts and purchase other new parts to complete. Stay tuned for progress reports.

Last weekend after pulling engines, I started scrubbing engine room and degreasing years of grime. This past weekend, was at it again, scraping, vacuuming, washing and flushing.

Here I've got a fan drying the bilge.

After wiping down with mineral spirits, applied the first coat of bilge paint starboard and port side. Will paint the center section later.

That looks great! What did you use for your grime clean up? I have found the "Purple Power" and "Castrol Supoer Clean" get the job done well. Purple Power is a little easier on the fumes the the environment I think.

I just bought a portable steamer at the second-hand store for $3.99. I tried it out on my truck and it really loosened up 20 years of grease and grime.

I am not prepping to paint, but I would just like to tidy things up the best I can.

You name it, I used it...Not one cleaner did it all but different applications of several cleaners seem to work.

Lots of fun!

Extreme Simple Green cleaned my bilge for painting. I did two passes and then it was ready to paint. This stuff is great. I used it on my motorhome and the bilt up crud from the diesel blowby just melted off without even scrubbing. They make it for cleaning aircraft.

Jamie, I'm sure you shopped those engines thoroughly. Where did you end up buying them?
My F32 in older that yours. 76' with 250 hp 360 chryslers, and they are getting tired, so I am looking around. I assume you are using the same velvet drive 1:52? I will also go with GM, but would like more hp, at least 300 a piece.
