Fuel Sending Units

Post by Marianne30 »

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about fuel sending units. I believe I have to replace mine, since my fuel gages do not work. They just keep fluctuating back and forth very fast between half and empty.

It sounds like a connection may have corrosion or you have a loose ground wire. Check the integrity of your wire connections first. That's a lot easier than replacing the senders.

One point most of you will already know, BUT I DIDN'T, was that when I replaced my original senders on my 1974 back in 2005, I should also have installed new gauges at that time, because the ohms were different. When new gauges were finally installed everything worked fine.

Some posts from earlier this month...

Also, if you remove the fuel wire from the sending unit your guage should drop to E. When you touch the wire to ground (i.e. the tank body) it should peg all the way to F. This only tests that your guage is working correctly, but not a guarantee that it's the right ohms.

replaced my fuel sending unit a few weeks ago. tried the moeller sending unit in a preinstall wire up. the gauge didn't budge. i purchased a sending unit and gauge kit from sunset harbor marina supply store and tried the same technique with my old gauge. worked perfectly. when i get to the boat i'll let you know who makes the kit. i only have one tank, located under the aft bunk. the swap out could not have been easier. what trojan do you have?

The sender/Gauge kit combo is from seachoice products.
