1965 28 Sea Breeze New Life

Post by Donhollys »

Hi
New to forum but old to boats. We recently purchased a boat back that we sold a year and a half ago. We didn't own it very long when another boat caught out attention but before that, the swim step got bumped before us and cracked the transom allowing water to seep in and rot a small area. I had the boat hauled and a new transom installed by a local shop. They gouged me a bit on repairs along with new bottom paint and new anodes. Needless to say I lost a bit of money selling it after only owning it for a couple of months.
The charm of this boat is why my wife and I bought it to start with. Teak and mahogany and repowered with a Chev 350 in the 80's. The boat had a lot of potential but was neglected for a few years before We bought it.
The guy we sold it to didn't use the boat for the last year and a half except he removed everything that wasn't nailed down, ie, Head system, all holding tanks, water heater, charging system, original manual bilge pump and other small items.
We have a 38' Silverton and spent a lot of time on it going all over the CA delta and San Francisco. Beautiful boat but it just isn't fun to drive and lacks the charm of the classic Trojan. We always felt we wished we had that boat back. Well sure enough we saw the guy put it up for sale. We took a look at and found all the stuff missing and he painted it two tone with house paint. Most probably would have walked away right then but I saw that he only put one hour on it since he owned it. Long story short, we bought it back for much less than we sold it.
Now the fun starts. I tuned it all back up and it runs very well but water comes in at the chine for a while after each cruise. I had it scheduled to go in to Ramon at Diablo Boat Works at the end of this month. He had a cancellation so we took it over last Tuesday. Put it on an elevator and of coarse the first thing is they pressure wash. I stayed and wanted to see the initial suspected problems. As they were washing, the bottom paint which was less than two years old was just blowing off all over the place. The next thing was a bunch of Splash Zone filler jammed into the starboard last 4' of chine. Well we knew we would find something. Ha! I know usually you get a survey before buying but I thought being a Sea Breeze with the plywood hull couldn't be all that bad and we didn't pay much for her. Survey came back pretty clean except for some soft wood in the chine on both sides.
Ramon says about 20 hours plus materials to replace the bad wood. I didn't think that was so bad. We're going to have him strip off the house paint and repaint the whole thing since the repairs weren't all that much. More pics and info to follow.

Don,

Love the fact that you want to fix what needs to be fixed.

The chine rots out on these Trojans and also on Shepherds because the chine itself wasn't angled properly to allow the water to continue unimpeded into the bilge. The water simply lays on the top surface of the chine. (I'm probably not telling you anything you don't already know). I have done chines in several wooden boats for this reason (especially Shepherds with roll down windows).

The rot spreads outward from the chine. The fact though, that the chines are showing wood rot doesn't mean the rest of the boat will necessarily be in the same state because the 90 degree chine was a design flaw. I will say this though, that when I had rotted chines I sometimes also had a rotted bow king board.

The above views are only from my own experiences and others here may have different thoughts to offer.

The twenty hours predicted by Ramon may end up being forty hours imho........ but still very well worth doing.

Possibly consider discussing with Ramon, the idea of angling the chine repairs to allow for freeboard water to drain unimpeded into the bilge.

All the best.

Thanks for the replies.
Great information Rick. I will see Ramon later this morning and talk to him about your suggestion.
I'll take all the information I can get. I've been around a while but don't know everything. We want this built right.

I'm currently replacing the starboard bottom on a 1966 28 Trojan sea skiff so far I've replaced the inner chine one stringer and three frames and 10 feet of strb side plank and 6 feet of port side plank. The front bow chine is made of white oak and requires steam bending along with outer stem all that is left to be done is the stem and the outer chines. i will try and upload pic's

Sounds like you have a bit more to do than mine. All the bottom repairs were completed Saturday. Now the sides are being sanded, filled and prepped for new paint. I'll post some progress pics of the repairs when I see the boat this week. Ramone has everything he did documented and photographed.
Good luck with the repairs 32pacemaker. Post some pics if you get a chance.

Don,

I think we all appreciate being able to view a Trojan restoration.

A lot of people take a long time to actually get a boat "wet".

Lots of "projects" out there, end up remaining projects, sitting on the hard for years. Time gets by and they end up being the best laid plans of mice and men.

You sure haven't fooled around, Don. You've worked pretty fast. Congrats.

Thanks Rick.
We were fortunate to have a healthy budget and IMO the best Woodright in the area doing the repairs. It seems to be a dying art as the woody's are slowly disappearing.
I've always loved these classic boats and now get to have one of my own on a solid hull. I'll post some more pics as the final details are completing.
