Slips on Cayuga Lake NY

Post by gregpalmr »

Greetings,

I am thinking of keeping my F-28 on Cayuga Lake in NY. I wonder if anyone can provide some feedback on the marinas there? So far I have talked to two marinas and thought about a few more. Here are my thoughts so far:

1. Southern part of lake

--- Allen Truman State Park Marina

Plus: Very pretty park, lots of parking, picnic area and trails, near Ithaca and activities there

Minus: So far south, it would less convenient to the canal and other lakes like Seneca and Oneida Lakes,
No gas or services, and no winter storage, no pool

2. North part of lake

--- Frontenac Harbor Marina

Plus: Not far from the canal and convenient to Seneca and Oneida Lakes,
Has gas and services, and winter storage,
Might not be as crowded as the southern part of the lake,
Not far to drive a car to activities in the Syracuse area

Minus: Not as pretty as the State Park, no pool, no camping for us or for visitors

--- Hibiscus Harbor Marina

Plus: Not far from the canal and convenient to Seneca and Oneida Lakes,
Has gas and services, and winter storage,
Might not be as crowded as the southern part of the lake,
Not far to drive a car to activities in the Syracuse area,
Has a restaurant on site,
Has a pool

Minus: No camping for us or for visitors

Any thought are appreciated.

You have to ask your self ,what do I need in a marina

Power ?
water ?
How easy is it to get fuel ?
Are there place to cruse to ?
A pool is nice But would you use it ?
How close is a repair or haul place ? Can you find winter storage ?
Camping ? Do you need this by the boat ? you can stay on the boat
Pump out ? there or near bye

Lot of things places can offer But look at what you need and really would use
Boating is good for the soul

As far as I know, Treman SP has a very long waiting list for slips.

I called them on Thursday and they had 6 slips available. Have you been there? What do you think of it.

Lockview is a small nice quiet place at the top of the lake. Beacon Bay is a little farther down near a sand bar where everybody parties.

Had a friend who kept a sailboat there for years. It's a nice park and a nice area. Lots to do. The only drawback is the traffic in Ithaca. Seems its bad day and night.

Brenda and myself spent last weekend touring all the marinas on Cayuga Lake and we decided to go with Frontenac Harbor mainly because it is on the northern half of the lake and will be convenient for trips through the canal to Seneca Lake and Oneida Lake. But also because it has full services including gas, maintenance and winter storage. Also we met some of our slip neighbors and they seemed nice.

Now I need to learn to pilot the F-28 safely and make the trip from Henderson Harbor, Lake Ontario, to Cayuga Lake. I am hoping the same discipline, patience and attention to detail that served me well in 400 hours of piloting an airplane (I just my sold my Cessna 172 last week), will help me be a safe boat captian.

I will keep the forum members updated on my progress in a separate thread.
