East Coast Boaters

Post by Diverted Income »

Have a friend that recently bought a Bestway LaBelle in Fair Haven Massachusetts. (I think) He wants to move it to FL Early January. Is that even possible or reasonable? No its not me. I'll stick with my F-32 on the Mississippi! His safety is my concern. I know nothing about coastal boating. Sloughs and sand bars are my thing! Interested in thoughts on this.
Thanks!

Almost the first question is, besides has he ever driven a boat before, if what about blackwater? Every pumpout from Massachusetts to prolly Norfolk is closed for the winter, so if there is no on-board treatment option, he's SOL (I crack myself up!). Not to mention taking an unknown and unproven boat places that you've never been when the days are short and the water is cold...... Based on the three facts given in the OP, I rate this idea a 4 out of 10.
I needed a less expensive hobby, so I bought a boat!

Oh and yes, he is a boater. Just unchartered waters. He has Florida experience. Just no NE Coastal experience that I know of.

I would worry about fuel as many marinas up north get iced in . Water and Black water could be a issue also . If he runs of shore he can pump out legally (3 miles ? ) . The inter costal in NJ from what I hear is not good so off shore maybe what he will have to do there . I believe it may be doable but will take some planning and subject to weather & temps . All and all I would wait till spring . Or perhaps hire a captain that has done winter runs and get the boat to say Norfolk area and take over . I assume this is a large trawler so trucking may not be a good option.

Near me! Im in Rhode Island, thats a trip i plan to do down the ICW one day. Ive followed a number of boaters from New England on youtube make the journey to Florida, Bahamas, Exumas and more, a dream thus far for myself. My father used to make such journeys when he worked locally for a sailboat builder delivering new boats and flying back.
