Kidde fire extinguisher recall

Post by comodave »

Kidde is recalling huge numbers of fire extinguishers with plastic handles. Check out their web site for info. I just called and they are replacing 6 of mine.

2 for me and a warranty replacement from First Alert for one that is losing pressure after a year. I bought 4 for the boat last year and 3 need replacement.

Kind of scary to have a 75% failure rate in one year on safety items!

So this is a bit scary. Thanks to this post, I have one for each car, two for the house and four on the boat now replaced. They send you the new ones and boxes to send the olds ones back. I figured since I have all the extra ones around, let me run a few drills with family and friends. I just "tested" my wife....

Not only did it take a long time for her to figure out how to remove the pin, once it was out she was squeezing the wrong part of the handle with of course no results. There was zero chance of her putting out a fire in an emergency. I have a feeling this was not an uncommon reaction. Like a flare gun, the person who needs to use a fire extinguisher is probably using it for the first time in a real life situation.

I would strongly recommend that you follow up on the recall and practice using all of the old ones. This was a huge eye opener for me tonight. Going back to the flare gun, I have had this exact same conversation with the Coast Guard. I have never fired one and said basically that I'll be learning how to use it - when I need it. I'm not so much worried about me but insert wife, friend, etc., into that scenario. This is the kind of stuff they should be teaching at the boating classes!

The handles seem cheap on the new one , we will see how they hold up . I was thinking most of mine were 1A10BC the replacement one is 10BC . We will see what else the send .

Just got a 3A 10BC to replace a 2A 10BC that was the last one I reported. This one came with steel handles to replace the plastic handled one.

Still waiting for two smaller ones for the boat that I reported first...
