Twin 350hp outboards on F36

Post by CTMI »

I’m thinking about buying a F36 and:

1. Taking off the flybridge to make it a hardtop

2. Taking out the inboards and all their gear

3. Building up the transom

4. Hanging twin Yamaha 350s on the back

5. Lowering the salon floor to be equal with the galley floor since there’s no motors down there anymore

I spoke with bob cushman who said John Leeds stated that he “saw no reason the outboards wouldn’t work”

I had a few questions though:

- how’s visibility for driving below on a f36?
- will 1500 lbs of outboards on the back adversely effect trim? I know weight in the back is actually a GOOD thing for the f36 so I’m hoping this will be good?
- is there a market to sell all the stuff I’m removing?

Has anyone put outboards on a f36 before?

how’s visibility for driving below on a f36? IMO it sucks. But some like it Your won't be the first to remove the brige
Lowering the salon floor to be equal with the galley floor since there’s no motors down there anymore .That's a plus

- is there a market to sell all the stuff I’m removing ? Yes

I think lowering the salon floor to the level of the galley will make visibility from the lower helm much worse unless you are very tall or stand on a platform.

you will have a lot of investment in those engines and modifications then it's worth. In addition i believe you would have a hard time selling it later on

You might be better off just buying different boat with outboards already

just my opinion!

I would plan to build a platform for the steering station and I’m also quite tall at 6’5” so I guess I’m double covered😬

As for the investment, I agree this will be somewhat expensive however the majority of the money is the engines themselves which I can unbolt and sell if it all goes horribly wrong. As for the reinforcements, that part is cheap it’s just marine plywood epoxy and glass. Oh, and time. Lots of time.

I would love to buy a ready to run boat that has what I’m building, but please find me a 36’ hardtop pilothouse yacht with lines as nice as the Trojan 36 with new or less than 5 year old engines and running gear on it. The closest things are a Sabre 42 salon express, a mainship pilot sedan 34, or a hinckley picnic boat 40. Now notice all those boats are 300k used. I attached a photo of F36 midnight. Look at that thing. I mean c’mon!

Ultimately though, it will never make financial sense but I’m doing it because it will be fun. I’m building a composite epoxy boat from scratch right now. I designed it myself using naval architecture software and a calculator. I’m almost done so I need a new project!

the words:

BOAT

and

INVESTMENT

only work in the same sentence if linked together with the word BAD
