89 mid cabin fuel gauge

Post by mrrudely »

we have one fuel gauge not working
mechanic says if it's the sending unit it may be impossible to remove and replace
does anyone know if the fuel tanks even each other out and therefor only one gauge is necessary?

No, the setup is a 125 gallon tank on each side. Each has it’s own sending unit so you do need it to be functional. It can be replaced but requires drilling a hole and installing a deck-plate which will be roughly in the area of the step on each side of the gunnel. I replaced both of mine a couple of years ago after living with both either not working or being inaccurate.

I’m almost positive I posted pics and details of what I did here.

They won't even them selves out .If the fuel burn is close to the same you can get a idea of how much fuel you have from the other . Can you cut a accses hole to get the sender out ?

same here on the 10 Meter Express, however I have only ONE tank.

changed the sending unit out to factory style in 2001

it lasted about 12 years

When that one failed, I replaced it with the new WEMA magnetic style with no real moving parts to fail.

Likely Bob Cushman at Beacon, the sponsor of this website, can get the correct sized unit for you.

Wema is the only way to go. Give them a call. They have great customer service. It should cost around $70. You need a 153054 SSS/SSL and the length should be 22”. BobCT does have a post about it. Just gotta drill a hole for access.

still have not resolved this but today I put a meter on the sending unit and got a bit over 8 volts
the fuel gauge at the dash doesn't budge, have not tried to take any readings at the dash
does the 8 volts mean anything?

Its voltage from the gauge. If you ground it, the gauge should go to full. If you disconnect it the gauge should read empty. If it does the sender is likely bad. If it does not you have a bad gauge.

it's the sending unit
looks like I will replace with the wema unit
looks like I will have to drill a hole in the floor to get the old unit out
any suggestions as to what can be used to plug the floor
