Sea Queen Fixer Upper
Hello!
My man and I just recently bought a 56 Sea Queen...
We truly aren't boat people, but Rob is a woodworker and a mechanic - so the project is in pretty good hands!
We have been working to remove the old varnish and sand down the bottom.... Rob has used epoxy on the bottom were there was some damage... next step is to paint the bottom and varnish the top.
I have gone down an exhausting road of research to try to learn more about bottom paint, etc. Rob's brother, who has built boats typically uses a latex paint.
Just wondering if anyone out there has a specific brand recommendation - we are simple folks who want the boat to look nice, but we are not looking to completely refurbish.... we want to do a good job, but more importantly, we want to get it in the water and have some fun with it!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Not a fan of latex paints on a boat . Will this be kept in the water ? Antifouling needed ? Color ? Looks like a Fun project .

I had I feeling I might hear that...
The boat will stay in water for short periods - like a weekend when we are using it. Otherwise, we will be taking it out of the water and either putting in a barn or covering it. If we're good, we will rinse it after each use with tap water....
I did do a bit of reading - someone else mentioned a product hyperlite? But the only info on their website I could find referred to fiberglass boats.
We have sanded down the boat - but not to the bare wood. Since it's plywood, we plan to re-paint it red or white - probably red. Rob is sealing some "mushy" spots with epoxy and fiberglass (?) (stuff that reminds me of stiff gauze). We plan to varnish the top side.
What is your dislike for the latex option? Just trying to educate myself here is small doses... I get pretty overwhelmed when I try to learn by doing research on line....
Thanks!

Honestly my experience with latex paints is very limited . I used some for a deck once it was ok but prefer reg, paints . I don't recall even seeing it at my regular marine suppliers and no issues with what I use Pettit and Interlux

We’re moving forward with the latex... I bought Sherwin Williams exterior latex gloss and we’ve put on about 6 coats thus far... probably do 3 or 4 more.... we’re applying pretty thin.
It seems tough - kinda rubber like and won’t scratch when we purposely try to scratch through it. We’re not sure what it’s going to do... so we will report back!
I have another question now... can someone tell me what these are and where they belong on the boat?

I am thinking they are a hull drain and there are more parts that go with it . It reminds me of the drain I had on a 1956 Wagemaker I had .But I could be way off . I forwarded the photo to Trojan expert .
As far as the paint I was assuming you were talking marine paints . I assumed wrong lol . Time will tell

Welp...
We took "her" out on the water for the first time.... and had a very successful trip! There was very little water - possibly just from our shoes... we are getting to know the boat and growing more comfortable with launching etc...
She looks awesome in my opinion
