On the "crushing" comment. I added plywood strips running front to back (epoxied and screwed to the factory cover). I positioned them so they squarely line up on the tops of the batteries and avoid crushing the cables.
BobCT, would like to see a couple of pics of that cover you modified with strips, when you get a chance. Let me understand the cover mod you did, do the batteries now take the weight of stepping on the cover or what takes the weight? Sounds like something I may consider doing to mine as well.
I was initially thinking of lowering the whole box down a few inches and then glassing in a couple of runners to the inside of the stringers and install a removable "deck plate".

Now that's a different way to do it! Is that a diamond plate screwed/glued to the top of the original cover? What about the piece of plate that seems to be along the bottom, what does that serve? I like the set-up for sure.

the bottom piece is cosmetic covering some wood structure that was there

Not to get off topic, (well, it's my topic so I guess I can stray from it) but I noticed you have a properly "molded" water hose coming from the circulating pump to the heat exchanger on the port engine, do you mind sending me the part number for it? I've been searching without confirmed success and short of calling a company, I've not been able to locate a couple of them.
Appreciate any info.
Love the clean white bilges by the way, great job on keeping them up!

That's it (CRU 98014), marinepartssource.com states that it fits my serial #72663 engine.
I appreciate the homework and your notes. I had seen that hose before, but don't remember seeing the fitment notes on their page.

Sorry, I never saw your reply above about the cover. Yes, the strips of plywood under the factory cover are positioned so that they go across the middle (roughly) of the battery tops and avoid the terminals. I added a piece of foam because I'm kneeling on that every time I use the boat when I flush the engines. Since the batteries sit higher, I had to reposition the hold down straps so they'll reach.
Let me see if I have a pic at home, I won't be back to the boat for a few weeks.
