Questions on Prop Antifouling Paints

I had my props done and they look nice and clean. I am considering using an antifouling paint for them as I launch the boat in a few weeks. Does anyone have any thoughts on the best product to use? Do they work well?

Propspeed works great , what grows on the props wont stick underway , But its costly apox $400 bucks for your boat .
Prop Coat (Product formerly known as Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier ) by Pettit works good 25 bucks a can , your would need 2 cans to get 3 coats .

I'm a fan of propspeed after one season and going for season two. The kit I got was $180 and did props/shafts, struts and engine/AC intakes. Not knowing exactly how far it would go, the props and shafts are really what I prepped by the book. Everything else was on the fly and still worked but not as well.

The props/shafts required no work this year, I just wiped them with a sponge. Barnicle free when I pulled it in the fall.

I use the Pettit product as it is much cheaper and it works well for me on all my running gear.
This is how it looks after two winter seasons in FL, you can see where the prop tips were redone last year as I tend to run in shallow sand at least once each season



The bottom paint is from Summer 2012... also Pettit Trinidad SR... I'm expecting it to last for 5 yrs without re-coating.

One note on Propspeed. When applied to shafts it needs to be mechanically removed if your shaft needs to be pulled as the thickness of the product makes it difficult for the shaft to pass through the cutlass bearing. Of course, none of us expect to find ourselves in that position, right?

Pettit Zinc Coat Barnacle Barrier 1792. Works great and a lot less $$ than the propspeed.

I second the Pettit Barnacle Coat. For grins when i pulled my boat two years ago, i put barnacle coat on one prop and shaft and another product on the other prop and shaft. Pettit won hands down. About 4 barnacles on the props near the hub only. I boat just north of baltimore.

This year i started another experiment. Pettit barnacle coat on one side at $20 per can, and cold galvanizing on the other for $9 a can. Read the label and tell me the difference. I know $11 is lost in the boat expense noise, but why not try?

i dont bother painting shafts, i usually get 3 to 6 barnicals per shaft after 7 months, my trim tabs i paint with regular ablative, they get barnicals anyway, not sure why I bother, im in Rhode Island
