I have been told, don't know if there is any truth to it, that if one does not require the license for specific activities it is best not to get it.
Why? I was told that as a licensed capt. carrying out recreational boating activities with passengers that one is then held to higher standards and expectations by the powers that be.
The other side of that coin is that as an educated captain one should perform at those expected higher levels anyway so it is a non issue.... I would expect that to be the case for prowlerfish.

I have my 50 ton masters, I would recommend taking your 6 pack. I found it very informative even after being a boater for more than 30 years.
As far as being held to a higher standard that may be true but you do not have to state that you are a licensed captain if you are boarded, unless of course you are being compensated by your passengers.

I have my 100 Ton Masters. I use to do a lot of charters both fishing and diving as that is how I purchased my boats.
Back when I tested we had to go to the regional exam center in Toledo, Ohio. If you referred to the license as a ''Six Pack'' you were kicked out and they would not let you test. They wanted you to refer to it as it's proper name... OUPV. (Operator of UnInspected Passenger Vessel's)
I was self taught and all went well. I did have an Elmer though.

the government red tape is a real pain in the butt! if your going to be "for hire" not only do you have to pass the test but you also have to be signed up for a random drug testing program, get finger printed, get a TWIC card, and have your vessel inspected every year. did i miss anything?!

life is tough! it's even tougher if your stupid.

unless your having over 6 persons you don not have to have the Vessel inspected. thats a why a lot of folks only charter 6 persons or less .chauzer wrote:the government red tape is a real pain in the butt! if your going to be "for hire" not only do you have to pass the test but you also have to be signed up for a random drug testing program, get finger printed, get a TWIC card, and have your vessel inspected every year. did i miss anything?!

Wes ,I am not sure where your coming from , But I am talking about if the boat needs to be inspected or not ,if caring more then 6 persons for hire the boat needs to be a inspected vessel (talk about red tape) 6 or less no inspection needed of course you need a 25 ton or larger license. for caring over 6 persons for hire.
