Pros are they can make much better use of space and can help balance the boat sometimes by engine placement and can help get a better shaft angle in some cases. cons are that it can make somethings harder to service like the stuffing box . but this can vary from boat to boat . it also gives you one more thing to take care of .
I am not a fan of V-Drives , but I would not let that stop me from buying a boat I like . I never realy thought about it, but I guess there are more pros then cons to them .

Also Vdrives are tough. Keep up on fluids and most will give you a lifetime of service. Just don go full throttle forward and then slam it in reverse

Another con is that the vdrives place the engines back under the cockpit sole, where they are exposed to leaks through the hatches. Straight drives put the engines under the salon, where you don't have water dripping on them.
But non of the cons mentioned are significant enough to make vdrives a bad thing, especially in a smaller boat (28-32 feet) where they create some hard to come by cabin space.

I am the owner of a '71 F26 with a chrystler 318 and Paragon v-drive. I have had great luck with it and just picked up an oil cooled v-drive to replace my old water cooled one just to make life a little bit easier.
There is another Trojan F26 at my Yacht club and he has a direct drive ford windsor 351, and he cannot get the performance that I have and he has a much smaller cabin.

Def cuz of the shaft angle. Or weight dist. As the Windsor is at least 265hp and 150-200 lbs lighter than the 225 Chrysler.

I have a fresh 351 Windsor at 300+ and a paragon V-drive. Mine is also a 71 F26. Big cabin. I wonder what my perf will be. As I have not put it in the water yet.

the 351 windsors were 233 hp that came in the Trojans and I would say did not weght less then a 318 ( don't know for sure ) the 318 always seem to more power then the 351 . IMO the 318 was one of the best if not the best marine gas engine ever ( the 440 was close ) and this is coming from someone that will only own chevy and ford cars or trucks
could not give me a mopar car ( well Hemi cuda ok LOL ) the 351 is a great marine motor too but its no 318 ,

Chrysler Corp sure made some fine boat engines. My son has two 318's that came out of his Bertram 28 that are rebuildable and could be had for a song (went to 4BT Cummins). I've got two fine 440's that are coming out of my F-36 in Oct (going to 6BTA Cummins) and I don't want to store them. Opportunity knocks.

They pulled the 318 out and put the 351 in. This is not a factory 351 from Trojan. The 318 weigh 150 lbs more and it was 225 hp. This one started at 265hp and added better cam, exhaust. Intake.
i had a 1971 Penn Yann Explorer with the 318 Seemed very sluggish. But was bullit proof. Might of been the Tunnel Drive :(

don't get me wrong nothing wrong with the 351 My f30 came with 302s and was repowered with 351s a lot of trojans had 2 choces low power 302(188 hp) or high power 318 (225) many models did not offer the 351 (the low/high power thing was what trojan called it )
