No mo Onan

Well I had enough of my unreliable old Onan Genset and after a bunch of research I went wilth the Westerbeke 5KW low profile genset. The MFR has been around for 68 years and that was a big part of my decision.

It will be finished on Monday but I thought I'd share the picture. The size difference is amazing !! and the thick red paint looks like it was dipped on. I dont think it will be rusting out lke my Onan anytime soon.

I'll followup when it's done..

Congrats on the new genny.

I replaced my old worn out Onan 6.5 in 2002 with a Next Gen 5.5 diesel.

The difference in reliability and decrease in noise made me smile.

You might consider a gen sep system in your exhaust line, it really makes a diffeence in the noise level.

That WB looks great. My old Onan 3.0 MDJA Diesel One-Lunger (No lunger!) genny is a loud, unreliable beast.

Which WB did you get? Gas or Diesel? Cost?

What boat did you put it in? Looks like you have it against the forward engine room bulkhead?

I like it a lot!

Damm, ran into one issue. The new Westerbeke requires 2" input and 2" output. So that means a new strainer, new Wet-Exhaust and an new thru-hull out the side. (1/4 difference from the old Onan setup) Oh Well... didnt count on that but the end result will be worth it...

To answer your questions,

1. The generator was $5500 a low profile gas 5Kw generator ($800 discount in there too)

2. Mounted to the rear of the engine room bulkhead.. ( the old Onan was barley an inch below the floor-board and used all the space between the stringers, so theres quite a difference in size )

Anyhow, having some other things done but I should be back in the water this weekend.. Wish me luck... ! I'll follow-up when done..

Get an Exhaust Sep or Gen Sep while you are at it.

The cost is minimal plus 1 additional thru hull and enough hose to do an inverted loop.

It will seperate out the cooling water from the exhaust.

Kiss that annoying noise goodbye.
