So of course they don't fit perfectly

First thing I need to do is notch the motor mount bracket so the engines can sit correctly on the rails

Right now they are getting hung up right by the tip of the screw driver

I will notch out with a sawzall so they drop down

Once they drop I will have to move them forward so the bottom of the Allison gears don't hit the bottom of the hull

This boat came with Detroit 892's as an option, same size block as my 871's

But the 892's used twin disc gears

The 2 gears inside the Allison's, one sits on top of the other so they are deep

The 2 gears inside the twin disc sit side by side so they aren't as deep

If I push the motors up about 6 inches, I will have enough clearance under the gears

I will need a spacer between the coupling on the gear and the coupling on the shaft

Marina wants the tent gone so they can put boats there

So on Sunday I sprayed a bunch of parts, tonight I put on a 2nd coat

pipes, heat exchangers, alternators, couplings, elbows etc

I built that work bench prior and just screwed in 3-1/2" deck screws only 1/3 way in and just hung all the parts on the screws to make it easier, worked out pretty good

Great Job, Doug. Pro job with the paint. Looks great.

Great photo record as usual.

Rick

p.s. I have a question, did you find that the Allison's had a noticeably longer hesitation while shifting from forward to reverse or vice versa? I looked at an Ocean Sunliner a couple of years ago with Twin Disc transmissions and a drop down output off the Detroit's. Those Twin Discs had about a 2 second or more hesitation before shifting which I didn't like. The owner claimed it was okay once you got used to it. I didn't buy the boat, but other people I've spoken with mentioned that there can be a pretty big shifting delay with the Twin Discs. I guess I'm wondering if the Allison's are similar.

Any chance they had electronic controls ? If so that will cause a delay , not bad once your use to it but can be unnerving at first . A seconded of delay can seen like a minute when docking .

Here's a little update from NY

Snow, lots of snow!

We got over 2 feet this weekend

Despite the snow, I am pushing forward, boat is wrapped again covering the cockpit and I had the marina put in a nice zippered door I bought.

I shoveled a path to the boat last night and had to do it again this morning

So I am happy to report the engines are now bolted down to the stringers and everything is aligned.

We had 2 major issues with getting these engines in place.

1 The shafts were too short

2 The gears were slightly hitting the hull on the outside corners

This is what we did

I had a machine shop custom make a set of spacers, these are 2-3/4" long and match up perfectly to the couplings. They also machined the insides of the couplings from 1-3/4" to 2" to accept my original shafts. I spent about $1500 on this vs I guess about $10k for new shafts

For the gears I just took a grinder to the hull, I only needed about 1/8"- 1/4", this hull is cored, but the fiberglass is 1/2" thick, so I am not too concerned about this small area I ground down

Next up is getting the exhaust together and running the fuel lines, I bought new Racor fuel filters/water separators, I have to figure out a convenient place to mount them.
