Oil Types for 280 gas engines
Hi guys,
I'm so close to putting the boat in the water for my first season. I just can't wait! I'm at the stage where I have to change fluids in the drivelines.
What oils are you guys using for the Engines, V-Drives and Transmissions?
From what I can see, I can put 10W30 in the engines and V-Drives. Is this correct?
Also, what kind of transmission fluid are you guys using?
Thanks for the all the help.
Christian

Re: Oil Types for 280 gas engines
Well, Christian I'm looking forward to seeing that Tri-Fly of yours out cruising somewhere on Rideau Lake. I'm berthed up in Portland at the other end, where locals refer to it as the Big Rideau, but as you know, its all the same lake. I'm sure you'll be cruising up here pretty soon. What name will she be known as?
Regarding my former tricabin and those same V-Drives, I bought a can of EP-68 Gear Oil in order to be ready to top up the gear oil in the v-drive. But it wasn't necessary as they always maintained their levels. I'm not positive that my v-drive oil was ever changed by the marina (your marina) during winter fit-up. My sense is that it's not part of the normal routine.
Walter V Drives take SAE 30 oil or the aforementioned EP-68 Gear oil. You can find the SAE 30 if you look for it. The V-drives are generally bulletproof
Good luck with your splash down.

Hi rickland35,
I'm currently at the Rideau Ferry Marina. At this time the boat is known as Confusion. I plan to rename her Ad Hoc to keep the spirit of Confusion alive, also like the fish Haddock and the Captain in Tin-Tin...
I thought it was funny

Re: Oil Types for 280 gas engines
The people at Antony-Keats, (the experts) advised using Mercury High Performance Gear Lube in Walter V-drives. I use Rotella 15W-40 for engine oil and ATF in the reverse drive.
Re: Oil Types for 280 gas engines
I myself and I have turned everyone I know onto using Shell Rotella 15w-40 which is a diesel oil. Its said to have additives excellent for the marine environment and its super cheap at Walmart, check it out on google if you dont believe me theirs many boaters using this

Re: Oil Types for 280 gas engines
I use Shell Rotella 15w-40 for most marine engines gas or Diesel (Shell Rotella 15w-40 meets both gas and diesel specs) 30W oil in Walter V-drives and Dexron ATF in velvet drive trans .

Re: Oil Types for 280 gas engines
I've dealt with a few rebuilders, that's their recommendation and is what they are shipping their remans with now. Didn't get into the details but I personally have several out there that have been in service for some time and is what I continue to use in the reman stuff. I don't have enough info on original equipment vs reman differences if any, so if I know it's original, I stick with the 30W. Next time I talk with one of the rebuilders, I'll try and get more details on their reasoning.

Thanks for the info guys.
@Prowlersfish and others,
The Shell Rotella you use, is it the "T" or "T5"? The T5 is synthetic.
Cheers,
Christian

Re: Oil Types for 280 gas engines

Re: Oil Types for 280 gas engines
Reading my response , I was not very clear Yes use the "T" (triple protection ) not the T5 or T6 . The main reason is the weigh . I use and recommend 15w-40 I also see no real need for synthetic . T5 and T6 have not been available in 15w-40 . T5 is now being made in 15w-40 so I would consider it .Christian wrote:That is what i saw. Re: Oil Types for 280 gas engines
Thanks for all the advice guys.
I will go with Rotella T for the engines and straight W30 for the V-Drives. As far as the Tranny fluid is concerned, What type of ATF oil are you guys using? Type 3, Type 4, Type 5...?
Thanks again for the support on this most mundane question...
