Well, I received my Spring letter from my marina here in Canada explaining the usual arrangements I will need to make to get launched. We've had a few days of above freezing weather and although my driveway is covered with a thick layer of ice, the snow had melted and I was definitely in the mood to think about boating. Then tonight we got blowing snow and freezing rain. I slip slid my way home from an evening meeting and boating has been sent to the back of the line.

ReelWild, have you had a chance to see where in the marina your boat was berthed in the past?... or will you be moving it to a different marina or even possibly outside of the Toronto area? If you head up to the Kingston area, let me know.

@Rick - boat should be going in tomorrow! Driving her in the lake from the marina to the west end of Toronto on the weekend if all goes well. Decided to go with a yatch club instead. Having reciprocated access to all other clubs on the lake is a huge bonus. Plus cheaper in the long run. May consider doing the liveaboard in the future, even in winter.. but we'll wait and see.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Reel Wild - How did she run on your trip down the Toronto shoreline to her new berth? Diesels perform as expected? Hull ride well. You're a brave man, getting out on the water early spring in the cool weather. What were your take-aways about the boat?

@Rick, trip went well. Having some electrical issues at the new marina but I'm sure I'll get them figured out shortly. Was a great day to drive it over, calm seas.

I see on my boat that I have x2 30A connectors, one receptacle and the other is a powered reel. I also have a 50A on a powered reel. I am wondering if I can use both 30A connections at the same time or would I need to use the 50A (with an adapter to a 30A) with one of the 30A.

Cheers.

Surprised no one has responded to your question to this point. Others will no doubt know more about this than I do, but I will give you my thoughts.

I have never had boat that utilized a 50 A connector but have to assume the pigtailed style of your two 30A connectors (even if they aren't actually pigtailed physically) are for marinas that can't provide you with a 50A plug-in. The two 30A plugs will be plugged into receptacles that are on separate circuits at marinas providing lower electrical capacity. Your internal wiring system will then divide up the power accordingly.

My friends big Searay plugs in as I have described above depending on what marina he is berthed at while travelling.

I don't know the exact set up on your 13 meter . I have seen many with 50 amp and a few of those with a 30amp also . The 30 amp is the just for min use as many things on the Boats I have seen like this are 220 volts AC/ water heater stove dryer and so forth . On those you can not use both the 50 amp and 30 at the same time as you with back feed and short . Do you have a owners manual ? ( you can get one from Beacon ) it may explain it . I am thinking the 30 amp not on the reel may have been added , but I don't know . My self I would try to use the 50 amp core plugged in to a 50 amp receptacle . Lacking a 50 amp receptacle I would use a Y from the 50 amp into 2 30 amp receptacle

Disclaimer I am in the states and here 30 amp is 120 volts and the 50 amp is 240 ( 2 120v giving you 240 )

So I did a little wire tracing and found that I have two Automatic Power Transfer Switches for the dual 50's and dual 30's, both with independent galvanic isolators -which may be causing my ground fault issue(s). Else my manual power switches at the main control panel.. need to troubleshoot some more. The GFCI (5mA) trips even with the mains off, after a short period of time.

So I can only utilize x1 50 and x1 30 at any given time.. my control panel has two banks (see original post/pic). I will need to split a single 30A or 50A into 2.

Also considering upgrading to a digital display for gauge readouts. Anyone have experience converting from standard gauges?

Been away for a few weeks, sorry for the late response.

If your dual AC inputs are sharing a neutral bus, that will often trip a GFCI, and that is the way boats used to be wired. To correct this, you need to add a second neutral bus and separate all the circuits. Sometimes this is difficult to do and takes lots of investigation to determine which main a particular neutral is on.

If you are unsure about this, it might be better to hire a marine electrical tech as marine wiring is different than house wiring.
