Wow! You must have hit something ... I can't imagine that would go over time without the rudders swinging up and hitting the bottom.

The life jacket was about your only choice. Good news is the shallow draft on the F36 meant the pressure wasn't as great a deep Vee boat would have been.

The boat next to my buddie's Hatteras is a custom 50' Monterey. They hit a buoy at 5am, and had to run back in and beach. Only way to save the engines.

Many boats have Y-Valves on their engines' raw water intakes, so they can suck water from inside the boat rather than through the scuppers. This would help a lot, along with 4 bilge pumps!

The boat had a bent rudder at one time and it could have been working the hull at that point. hidden cracking ? I straightened the rudder long ago but less you had x ray vision how could you know ? I will say that is the weakest part of the hull . its thin there and has sharp turns in the glass . I don't think the glass was 1/4 thick at that point. it is now close to 1 1/2 with gentle turns in the glass . I added 1/4 glass to the other side just because and plan on redoing the other side to match it exactly this spring . I had planned on replace the rudders long before and in fact had new rudders .I went to a different style

That's definitely a bad day on the water. I've been 1st on the scene at 1 sinking and 1 burning (to the water line), and don't ever want to go through that.

U the man Paul, if that happens to an aft cabin boat it's most likely gone. how long does it take to untie the dingy now ?

Dingy ? who needs a dingy ? But in about 10 to 15 seconds this can be overboard .

I must have issed the original post on this event last June.

So sorry to hear of your misfortune, however kudos to you for saving her AND for doing what was necessary after the incident to save her onging reliability.

Here's a photo of my crash pumps fittings/fresh water flush units. Please note the nipple has since been plumbed with a quick disconnect for a garden hose.

RWS , you did not miss the original post as this is it . I did not have the time back in June and even if I did I did not feel like sharing at the time. I guess 7 months later its time .

Crash valves are on the to do list.

Do you have a screen over the end?

I assume you have a valve on your thru-hull? Can't see it in the photo.

I bought replacement stainless Apollo handles (some valves come with them) to replace the galvanized handle which rusts out in a season or two and gets weak and won't turn when you need it most.

What an amazing story, I can't imagine what stress that ordeal must have put on you. I think it would have made me bald! Glad to hear you saved her and everything worked out, thanks to quick thinking and actions on your part. Makes me want to make sure my project is all done right, even more!

stress ? it was not that bad ( I say that now LOL ) but I have a lot more grey hair
