I have been researching brands but no choice made yet. Defender marine is offering a free anchor with purchase of Lewmar winch (complete kit) and really low prices. I did also check and have no access to locker thru bulkhead at vee berth, topside only. Good windlass is about $1000.00 more than these, that will buy a lot of gas. Hopefully others who attend Lankford Bay meet will have winches mounted to compare.

windlass

I had a good F850 installed on my 1986 10 meter, it was my wifes christmas present. the owners son from Good came from jersey to essex maryland and installed it in one day with a helper. total cost was around $2500.00. It has worked flawlesly for 10 years. I will be at langford bay if you want to look at the installation, they covered the anchor locker hatch with 3/4 starboard and mounted the winch on top, there was no access behind the mirror, they removed the mirror and cut a hole into the locker.

I chose to mount mine just forward of the anchor locker.

This gives me access topside to the locker.

In retrospect, it should have been about 3" farther aft to avoid occasional issues with "piling" up the 30' of chain on my rode.

Here's some photos:

good windlass

Post by bigrgh »

my 84 10 meter has the original Good Automatic Windlass with free spool drop, it is an absolute workhorse i replaced the motor this year due to salt corrosion but the windlass works perfect, there is a place in RI called wickford marine consignment that has three used units, one for two hundred and two for twofifty. one even has solinoids and controls. i was going to buy one for a spare but dont think ill ever need too. also the Good Automatic windlass co. has a website and are located in barnegat N.J.
