I read in the manual that SAE 30 is the recommended oil.

We had been putting 10W40 but I'm going with the SAE30 as recommended.

Hey Big D I loved your first response, that was quite diplomatic I do not know how that could upset anybody that was perfect.

What I do is every 3 or 4 oil changes I drain the oil and fill the engine up with soapy fresh water and run the engine for 5 to 10 minutes or until it starts making funny noises, drain and refill up new oil. What you end up with is a very clean engine.

Some times a man with only 3 fingers walks by the boat. OK.

my merc cruiser is the same in the book but I use 10-40. Seems to take forever to drain the recommended oil, sometimes you gota let the drain hose hang over the side of the boat for hours

The whole "What oil should I use" question relates directly to what engine you have. Most of us, unless a repower has taken place, are dealing with older gas engines. Flat tappet style, before the roller cam evolution. So if you have one of these older power plants you will probably see the reccomended oil is straight 30 weight, and not one of the more modern multi viscosity oils. That being said if I was going to run a multi grade oil in an engine that reccomended SAE30 I would stick with the 10-30.

Oh and Jeff, don't bother with the hose over the side, thats for noobs. Just drain the oil into the bilge and run the pumps. It helps keep them lubricated too for long life.

You make a good point on the flat tappets , However that is the exact reason not to use 10w-30 ( or 10-40) Both the 30W (HD) and the 15w-40 are better suited for flat tappets ( more zinc). Many Marine Engines when to 15w-40 from the 30W . Oils have greatly improved in the last 30+ years . On the engines that may list 10w-30 you will find its for lower temps ( may be fine up north ) .
