Repowering 198310 meter Trojan

I recently acquired a beautiful 1983 Trojan 10 meter International. The old mercursier 454's are tired and I'm seriously considering investing a 'boat load' of money into repowering with diesel engines.
I'm looking for new ( or used) Yanmar 4YB180's (pair).
I've been told the new Yanmar's are electronic and although super fuel efficient, they are super expensive (like $32K/ each).
Any leads on the 180's or any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks

also http://trojanboat.com/upgrades-repowers/

Don't limit your self to electronic diesels no real difference in fuel burn .

Thanks for the reply prowlersfish,
I have the 10 meter express (1983)
The Fiberglass arch has been removed and a stainless steel arch replaced.
It's an awesome looking boat.
How do you load pics on here?
When I try to attach a photo file I get a 'file too large' response.
WTF

You just need to down size the photos . I think thee are different programs to do so . But what I di is just email them to my self and down size them then . Kind of a pain but it works for me .

The '83 express is not the mid cabin boat.

It features the engine room liner and the stringers with no structural wood.

I REPOWERED MY 1983 SAME BOAT AS YOURS WITH TWIN YANMAR 6LP turbodiesels.

Completely changed the character of the boat and there are many posts on this FORUM REGARDING THE MANY BENEFITS OF CHANGING OUT TO THE DIESELS.

sorry about the capslock

Thanks RWS,
All that I've read says these boats are prime for repower to diesels.
I've seen your reports on your repower and it's made me crave the same thing for my old Girl.
I know I can do some of the removal but I've enlisted a Yanmar Dealer in my area for the actual install and connections.
Problem is he says new Yanmars are electronic and the size he recommended (175's) are about 32 thousand each.
I'm looking for some used Yanmars that I could affordably buy and do a rebuild to make sure they are fresh.
Say $5-7 K each for the used and $12-15 ea. for the rebuilds and have roughly $20K in each engine.
Am I thinking realistically?
How am I going to find them?
If I dump $55 to 65 K in this boat, does it make sense? I'll still have a 35 y/o boat.
It's true, no structural wood in the engine room liner and stringers. And the Hull is mint!!!

I know in VA where there are two Cummins 5.9L that I know you can get inexpensively that are ready for a refresh.

I believe you would regret going with 175 hp engines . That boat really needs more power . As far as Cummins B they may be too big ? RWS will Cummins "B" fit ? I was thinking you said something about it.

As far as used engines and gears there is more to it then will it fit . Look at what the RPM range is an what the gear ration is . I have seen more then 1 diesel install that looked great only to find they can not get a large enough prop on the boat . Many diesels turn a much lower RPM and need less reduction in the trans . My boat cam with 4000 rpm gasers and 2 to 1 gears and 20x20 props . My diesels turn 2800 rpm 1.5 gears turning 22x22 props If I would have stayed with 2 to 1 I would not been able to get the right props on it .

Less complicated is better.

less to go wrong.

Suggest anyone contemplating marine diesels avoid common rail versions.

Way too much electronics and electrical connections for a marine environment.

In 2005 my first choice was the Cummins, however we determined that height was going to be too close for comfort.

Next were the Yanmar 6LP and the Volvo.

The Volvo had a god deal of electronics on it - fuggetaboutit

That left me with 3 basic choices - rebuild the existing 454's, including all bolt on components (heat exchangers and engine mounts were in bad shape too) or do NEW Crusaders which was actually cheaper than a COMPLETE rebuild of the 454's and all ccomponents.

The decision was easy.

I used the NEW CRUSADERS (this was 2005) as a baseline cost. Now all I am looking at is THE DIFFERENCE to do the upgrade.
Also replaced the HVAC unit and all the dash guages at the same time
The Result is basically a mechanically new vessel.
At the present time 12 years later I am just wraping up a cosmetic restoration of ALL new soft goods, new PlasTeak swim platform, new stainless steel rubrail and a new Northern Lights genset.
To replace what I now have with a new similarly equipped vessel would be out of my financial capability, and once a new one is paid off, calculate your depreciation cost.
That depreciation cost is greater than the cost I have to refit my boat.

My diesel Trojan is 100% reliable and carbon monoxide proof.

makes sense to me.........

Also, lest I forget, DO NOT UNDERPOWER your project.

This boat was designed and engineered for 330 horse Crusaders

I am running 315 Yanmars - they are fine.

Should you under spec the engines you will be stuck with a PIG that you won't be happy with and that you will be unable to sell, unless someone wants a houseboat.

Thanks RWS for all the suggestions and experience you have provided.
I get it, I'd rather have too much power that I don't need than to have no power when I do need it.
I'm still left with the same issue though,
Yanmar's are the answer but where do I find a pair suitable for my boat.
New doesn't sound like the feasible answer.
That leaves me with used and possibly refresh of engines.
I have a Yanmar dealer looking for me and I have time to wait.
So...if anyone has any leads, keep me in mind.
Thanks

EPA requirements have effectively killed the Yanmar 6LP turbodiesel in the U.S. market.

The replacements is way too complex for my tastes and the expense makes it cost prohibitive.
Dunno what else is available out there.

Bear in mind an inline 6 will be taller and narrower than the V8

It will also be LONGER, and will likely rquire a downangle gear

If you choose the Cummins (GREAT ENGINES) triple check the height issue.

I dream about diesel motors all the time. The cost alone keeps me from every really doing it. When the Crusaders wear out, they'll be rebuilt with maybe a little stroke, but I don't run them hard, so they probably will be around for a long time.

If I'm going to spend $60,000 on diesels, there is no way in hell I'm putting 170 hp motor in. That 10 meter needs at least low 300's if not more. Twin 370-400 hp diesels, and that thing would be amazing. If you're gonna spend the money anyway, overbuild.

The more I think about the diesel upgrade, the more I realize I am dreaming too.
Can't imagine sinking that much money into a 35 y/o boat but it's one hell of a boat.
Not something you can find in today's boats.
Maybe I get lucky and find a well maintained Tiara with twin diesels and let go of the old Trojan.
How dare I even suggest on this Trojan Forum.
My Crusaders are running and they still purr like a kitten so I'll run them gently and continue to put gas in the tank.
Thanks Todd for a reality check.

If your going to repower with diesels , it should only be done if you plan on it being the forever or at least long term boat ( unless you have lots of extra $$$ )
