Are you sure it's vapor locking? Could it be just idled down too slow?

The cables should not matter. The cable attaches to an arm. At the bottom of the arm there should be a low idle adjustment screw. The screw should be set to to maintain a low idle, even if you took the cable.

The other thing that happens is the low idle air ports on the carb get gummed up and blocked. The port is there so that when the throttle is closed (butterfly completely flat closing the the air intake), that enough air to maintain low idle can pass around through these ports. Some are set with lead, others have adjustment screws near the base of the carb. In any case, a can of carb cleaner with a straw generously applied when hold the engine at about 1500 rpm will normally clean them out.

I've collected a few gratuitus cocktails at the dock for having a can of cleaner in the dock box and a few willing moments to lend a hand.
