I found that fascinating, although I doubt many others will.
Do you have any more info on what method is best for resisting vibration?
Lock nut, lock washer, any combination of the two, etc.?

I think that would vary on application. In many cases lock washers/lock nuts are not used and sometimes just washers. Engines head bolts you will never see lock washers but sometimes regular washers. Look at your all bolts on your engine how many places do you see lock washers? Now, look at your shaft couplers bolts always lock washers or lock nuts. Over the years I have found and repaired many loose couplers. And most had lock washers. Yet that was not the cause. The use of SS bolts and or course threads or both was the cause. SS stretches and course heard does not clap as well. Always use grade 8 or better fine thread bolts on couplers. I also prefer lock washers .
