Trojan Porn or How I Wasted My Spring

I am ex-Navy. I can't seem to get it out of my system. If it moves, I grease it. If it doesn't move, I paint it. My 10M looked just like RWS's boat. But I couldn't leave well enough alone. My transom from those stylin' 80's stripes back was painted by the previous owner in black imron. Not bad, but the sun had checked the gel coat, which led to the painting, which led to the checking going through the paint. So I decided to fix it. I test sanded and determined the checking went all the way into the fiberglass. Ugh. So I sanded the imron and laid up new glass over the entire transom. There were a couple of dock bonks on the hull, so those were fixed too. What the heck, I'll paint the whole thing. Real Mensa move, that was. After much sanding and filling of all obvious faults, primer went on. After sanding the primer, I found an incalculable number of new faults. Darn things breed. Luckily, I'm not that bright. When my labor hours topped 500, I could no longer count so I stopped keeping track. Most of the boat is now arctic white imron, with cream colored non-skid and a burgundy boot stripe. The interior is primarily white vinyl with burgundy highlights to match the new canvas. I added a camper back so I can extend my boating season (it just came out of the water last week). Below decks were treated to new tan ultraleather cushions, plus nice curtains and a matching new v-berth mattress. Most of my 'before' pictures were lost, but here are a few 'afters'. The lines on these 10m's still look modern when they are all shiny.

You should be prowd of your efforts. The boat looks fantastic. For the record, don't ever keep track of the hours. It's a labor of love. And I thought I was the only one that was nuts for my Trojan!

One question, I see you did all the elbow work but did you spray the paint or gelcoat too?

The boat was shrink wrapped yesterday, so more photos may have to wait. As for painting, my marina did the final application. I can't say enough good things about them. I have some experience in automotive refinishing, so they let me do the prep. This included the ridiculous amount of taping before each area was painted. They sprayed for about 15 hours total.

Great stuff.

Those Internationals were and still are really something.

Aside from the colors and patterns, they remain very contemporary, nearly 30 years after they were first designed.

I'll second the motion on the need for more pictures!

Thanks for the reply, They really did a great job. Taping is does take a long time and really is not easy to do it right.

Is that your boat house too? Nice!

I did a deck off restoration of my 1984 Chaparral Express Fisher, including new wiring, replacing every bolt, and a new 454 ... 2 years and 6 coats (2 primer, 4 top of White Awlgrip), but it looks great!

Plan to redo my F32 next year (if/when I find time), as well as my old Vette (same time issue).

As an ex-Navy man myself , I understand. My 10M has the funky angle stripe near the engines. I also have a little bit of gel coat crazing near the waterline outboard each engine. I'll probably get a professional to fix as there was some moisture readings on the survey, but I'm afraid that one thing will lead to another.

On my last house, I replaced the doors, which led to the trim, which lead to the house painting, which led to replacing some of the siding first, which led to new gutters.

Where are the pictures? When I was in Groton, I was the environmental officer. I remember tooling around in the Boston Whaler taking bottom samples enjoying the foliage.

Boy, you sure did a nice job on her. I was wondering where you got the time, till I realized your season is limited way up north there! Down here in north Florida we can boat year round! Please do post some more pics , I bet the interior is beautiful too. Roy
