Sign of the times???
So...... The Pope is a quitter? NOBODY quits being Pope. The last person to do it was Gregory XII in 1415, who did so in an effort to end the Western Schism.

So is the Pope just another fella who in modern times decides to walk out on his responsibilities when the going gets tough or hes is feeling poorly? This will be the first Pope not to die in office in about 600 years.

I'm on the fence on this one. I was brought up Catholic. There is something to be said about stepping down when it's felt that it would be best for the cause. There is also something to be said about carrying on an ageless tradition, however, I for one am of the belief that just because it's tradition doesn't mean we should oppose change for the better given the times. It would take generations to happen on a wholesale level but I keep hearing about a decline in the faith, I'm thinking a little change to bring it into this century might be a good thing right now! I also hear about another religion that is gaining intense momentum. The Catholics better roll up their sleeves lest they lose ground!

Interesting. I don't have a horse in this race, but I was hoping to hear from someone that did. My insight is purely from a historical perspective.Big D wrote:I'm on the fence on this one. I think you are onto something there with the change is good espescially in a time of declining faith. I would think that a younger Pope (say 30 years younger than Ratzinger was when he was elected) could help with that. I also think staying away from names like Benedict, Honorius and Pius and maybe steering more towards John, Martin, or Stephen would be a bit more modern as well.
Lucky for the Catholics, our Catholic VP, Joe Biden, has already said he is "not running" for Pope. I'm sure that statement was met with some degree of relief in the Vatican.

Re: Sign of the times???
Maybe he's stepping aside so a younger Pope can gather a great army of Knights and march East again....

I think that was the Third Crusade you are refering to. Richard the First of England (Coeur de Lion) vs. Saladin. Saladin kinda got his butt kicked for awhile there but in the end didn't come out too badly.

It seems Politics and Religion always seem to bring out the extreme side of people.

How many times? Don't know. But probably at least 90% of the times.alexander38 wrote:and how many times has the words God is Great been yell'd just before the BOOM !
